She is credited as India’s first female teacher and one of the early revolutionary feminists in the country.

She got married at the age of 9 to Jyotiba Phule, who was 13 years old at the time.

Phule, along with her husband, opened India’s 1st school for girls at Pune`s Bhide Wada in 1848. They went on to open more schools through an education society.
