Hampi evoked great curiosity during the colonial period and several British archeologists undertook excavations at the site.

During the British rule, Qutub Minar was repaired in 1828 after the 1803 earthquake damaged the tower.

Like the Qutub Minar, the Char Minar also underwent repairs during the colonial period, but the monument was revamped by the then Nizam of Hyderabad state.
