The beloved British theatre artist and actress Dame Maggie Smith passed away on September 27, leaving the film, television and theatre world in devastation.

While she is known for her roles in popular film series and shows like Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, she made her mark on stage before the screen.

Smith studied acting at the Oxford Playhouse and started her journey on stage in 1952. She made her Broadway debut in 1956 with the revue New Faces of 1956.

She joined Britain’s National Theatre company in 1963 and went on to star in acclaimed plays like Othello, Hedda Gabler and Miss Julie.

She left the National Theatre in early 70s but continued her journey on stage alongside delivering hit performances on screen.
