South Korean authorities arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol amid protests
15 January,2025 01:03 PM On January 15, South Korean authorities arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over accusations related to his martial law declaration on December 3. A motorcade left his residence, where he had been staying behind barbed wire and heavy security. Earlier, over 3,000 police officers and anti-corruption investigators gathered at his home, facing protests from his supporters and members of his party. Yoon’s lawyers argue the arrest is illegal and meant to publicly shame him. This is the first-ever arrest warrant issued for a sitting South Korean president. Yoon’s martial law announcement shocked the country, leading to his impeachment on December 14. The Constitutional Court is still deciding whether to uphold his removal from office.
