A lack of communication is undeniably concerning, irrespective of how serious your boyfriend’s reasons may appear to be

I am a 28-year-old woman and have been in a long-distance relationship for two years now. My boyfriend and I used to live in the same city until he was given a great job opportunity and moved to another place. We have been close for a long time and have been planning a future together but, for the past few months, he is so busy that we barely get any time to chat. This was okay for a while because I knew he was struggling with work, and wanted to be supportive, but it is getting out of hand. Things are so bad now that we barely manage one or two proper conversations in a month. I have told him that things can’t go on like this and he agrees, but he also says he’s doing it for us and for financial stability. He wants a promotion which means long hours and meetings. Should I accept his reasons and just deal with this, or should I assume this is a sign that our relationship will always come second to his professional goals? It is making me question whether I want to commit to something long-term with him.
A lack of communication is undeniably concerning, irrespective of how serious your boyfriend’s reasons may appear to be. He may well have your best interests at heart too, but communication is one of the foundations of any solid bond, and choosing anything over it is a case of misplaced priorities. It may be premature to write off the whole relationship just yet, given that there are no other problems, but it is also critical that this is addressed as soon as possible. Insist on a discussion to address your concerns, plan a meeting in person if possible, and reiterate how it is making you question your future together. If your boyfriend doesn’t re-align his priorities and can’t find a way to make space for you alongside his professional commitments, you have a valid reason for rethinking a future with him.
