I have a problem with lying that I can’t control even though I know it hurts everyone close to me. My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and he is frustrated because he doesn’t know when I am lying and when I’m not. These are small lies and don’t really mean anything, but he says it has reached a point where he can’t trust me anymore and wants to break up with me. I have tried my best to be honest with him lately but now he is never sure even when I’m not lying. How can I resolve this and make him feel more secure? I don’t want to lose him.
To rebuild trust is one of the hardest things to do in any relationship and it can only happen if you are both committed to making this work. If he says he can’t trust you, but is willing to give this relationship another try, you can both find ways of building trust by corroborating everything you say until he feels more secure about everything you tell him. If he isn’t prepared to put in that effort, you may manage to hold on for a while longer, but it isn’t a sustainable situation because no relationship can survive without trust for very long. Talk to him, tell him how you feel and why his presence in your life is important, and ask for a chance to be able to prove that you’re ready to be honest. You should also consider speaking to a counsellor about this habit, given that you know how much it hurts people you care about. Tell him you are seeking help, and work on it.

What can I tell my partner about my parents when I know they aren’t fond of her?
You can tell her the truth, and temper it with your own opinion of her. She is with you, not your parents, and adults can always find a way of getting along, at least for a short while.
