JUST a few months ago, we were reviewing a bike racing game from Milestone and now, there is another one. This one is called MXGP Pro and features both motocross and supercross. However, it comes with just as many problems.

Let us start by being clear: the game is a simulator and not meant to be mindless arcade fun, like the motocross racing in Crew 2. That said, the game has some seriously tough tracks and the bikes are finicky, especially if the weather is bad. Riding around takes time to master, even if you have managed to finish their built-in tutorial. In fact, we recommend you do the tutorial a couple of times over, to get the nuances right. It took us nearly six attempts to complete the first race. The major stumbling blocks were the short three-second timer that goes off every time you go out of track and then auto resets you to the track before you realise what happened.

At some places, the track was also poorly marked, which means that most of the time we were heading in the wrong direction — you have to master looking at the map while driving. Frankly, it is a huge learning curve to pay attention to multiple things at once, but it is an expected stumbling block because real racing is notoriously difficult. There was a sense of accomplishment at the end of the ordeal, which felt good.

However, if you thought the next few races were simple because of our perseverance you’d be wrong. The game was a fight every step of the way. While in some places, you could go on full speed and comfortably turn on a dirt track, in another area, your rider would just fall off because we were too slow on the turn. Even jumps and landings are unpredictable and despite executing them well, you might not nail it. These issues might be addressed in future updates, but as of now, it is inherently flawed.

The game isn’t all that bad. Except for the mannequin-like audience, the foliage and tracks look great. We also like the home ground, where you can practice without being timed out or get pressured with competition. The rewind feature was useful as well — it can let you fix errors, which means you can correct that overshot corner or that jump you leaned into too much, by pressing the rewind button. There is a time limit to how much you can rewind and you’d want to use that responsibly.

The game lets you customise the bike before a race, but the text to understanding what to choose is very limited and you might need to go online to learn how to use this feature.

MXGP Pro could get better over time, but as of now, it is very hard to play and enjoy. The game has potential, but we feel it could have been more welcoming to newcomers with an arcade mode. Overall, it is a much better effort than the last bike game from Milestone.
