Game review: Fun, bizarre game that’s worth it

Scott Pilgrim game

Scott Pilgrim is back, the game has made a comeback for the newer consoles. And if you played it before, it is just as amazing as you remember it being. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the game sticks to the original storyline. You control Scott Pilgrim, who has discovered the love of his life in Ramona Flowers. Unfortunately, to be with Ramona, he has to first defeat each of her seven evil ex-boyfriends. The levels take you through the story, and at the end of each, you have to defeat one of the villains.

Scott Pilgrim was created in the style of Streets of Rage, so you go around beating goons on the street just like it. You can also pick-up various items on the street to beat them up or just use the passed-out goons themselves to bash up the others. Each bad guy has a specific pattern that you need to remember, else this game gets tough to beat real fast. I ended up playing the first level five times before I managed to reach the end. It did get easier after a while.

This is partly thanks to your character getting to keep the money and experience from the previous runs. This experience, in turn, can help upgrade Pilgrim. Like in an RPG, Pilgrim unlocks new powers as he gets stronger with experience. This makes it easier to defeat the hordes of enemies as you progress. Where this game truly shines is the co-op play, besides making it a lot more fun. The extra manpower makes the overall experience a lot more relaxing.

I also like the look of this game. It’s a combination of a retro game and the art from the graphic novel, which makes it stand out. It also has an online co-op mode which means you don’t need to wait for someone to come over to play in a group.

Scott Pilgrim is a fun game, but most people would find it frustrating to play solo, especially with the first few levels. If you are prepared to brave that, the learning curve goes ahead. Networked though, Scott Pilgrim is equal parts amazing and equal parts bizarre in a good way. It is also significantly cheaper than most games out there so well worth the money spent.
