Online Academic Summer School, SOAS

The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) was the first UK university to offer an online summer school in response to the pandemic. It offers intensive courses, which feature a blend of live tutorials, recorded lectures, group discussions and independent learning along with a range of online resources for students. The courses, suitable for undergraduates, graduates and professionals alike, are on areas like media and gender, sustainable finance and climate change, and international law, with sessions beginning on June 28 and July 19. There are also complementary workshops on media skills, along with online sessions on yoga and mindfulness and Arabic music. “Whether you want to earn credit, expand your existing knowledge or explore a new area of interest, the Academic Summer School will develop your critical thinking, enhance your career skills and challenge you with new perspectives on the global issues of our time,” says John Whitaker, global partnerships manager at the university.

Asian Cinema Education

An ongoing international project created by four European film festivals—Five Flavours Asian Film Festival, Udine Far East Film Festival, CAMERA JAPAN Festival and Helsinki Cine Aasia—this programme aims to encourage interest in Asian cinema, and offers an opportunity to work closely with experienced film scholars, festival organisers and industry professionals, and is best suited for future film journalists, bloggers, programmers, festival organisers and Asian cinema enthusiasts.

It allows both active participation and auditing, and presents 16 lectures by experts on subjects like Japanese horror and science fiction, the success of the Chinese film industry, the auteur cinema of Thailand, the fascinating aspects of animé and the contemporary cinema of India. It also has free-of-charge interactive online courses focusing on different aspects of Asian film criticism and journalism. “The lecturers combine a real interest in pop culture with a wide knowledge about its social contexts, links to traditions, and its relationship with the trends present in modern culture. The fascination with selected tropes or auteurs opens the door to an in-depth understanding of Asian cinemas and their role in the context of world film,” informs Anna Maminska, coordinator of the project.
