With her auburn hair and svelte figure, Nicola Benedetti can easily pass off as a model. But apart from her looks, this 26-year-old is equally known as an acclaimed violinist.

The artiste, who started playing the violin at the age of four, has performed with major orchestras and conductors across the globe, including the London Symphony Orchestra, WDR Strasbourg Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington. She was appointed as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) last year.
Benedetti describes herself as a chamber musician who likes collaborating with cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk. Together. The trio has been performing since 2008.
Today, she concludes her three-city tour (Delhi and Chennai) in Mumbai with composer James MacMillan, who leads the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Benedetti exclaims, “Apart from playing Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 5 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 4, the orchestra and I stayed in each of the cities for a few days, conducting workshops and getting involved with local communities.”
The artiste, who has been conducting exchange programmes with students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and AR Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory, says she enjoys teaching. “I have dedicated a lot of time to this element of music. It’s nice to work with another organisation that is serious about sharing western classical music with all members of the community and not just a select few who can afford to attend the concerts,” she adds.
