Want to do something good for someone? Pick from these three initiatives to spread cheer through random acts of generosity

Make the world a kinder place

Your Turn Now
Your Turn Now (YTN) was launched in December 2009 to encourage people to perform random acts of kindness towards a stranger.

For founder Rushabh Turakhia, a businessman and writer, donating money is not the only way to show kindness. “It’s the action that counts,” he says. It could be helping a person who trips on a stairs, or leaving your favourite book behind at a café for a stranger. Be an anonymous do-gooder and leave the YTN card, which lists steps the next person needs to carry out to continue the chain, behind. Turakhia’s initiative has now spread across 38 countries and the card has been translated into 10 languages including Spanish, German and Russian. “My target is to reach out to at least seven billion people,” he says. It’s your turn to help him reach his target.

#1SmallStep
Our third pick is #1smallstep, a pay it forward initiative founded by Rohan Bhansali of digital media agency Gozoop.

Puppy

“You can make the world a better place through small acts of kindness,” says Bhansali, who believes it is all about expressing everyday kindness through anonymous acts. Leave a small gift on a colleague’s desk, pay toll for the car behind you, fund someone’s dinner, or even share your donut. In a nutshell, anything that brings a smile to a face. “Perform an act of kindness and leave a #1SmallStep Card behind so the chain continues,” he says.

A Crane A Day
Wouldn’t you listen to a paper crane that asks you to perform a small wonder? Ria Sakraney and Divya Dev started A Crane Day in 2013 as a blog with the idea of making colourful paper cranes and photographing them.

The project gained greater proportions with several restaurants distributing them with messages on them. Whoever receives it, must carry out the deed listed on it. Do what the cranes tells you: hold the door for someone, feed a stray, or donate your old clothes. It’s a no-brainer.
