We can't all be a Duchess like Kate Middleton, but we can dress like one. This New Year, ditch black for all shades of blue

Kate Middleton's penchant for blue will be an inspiration for Christmas 2017

Kate Middleton

The dress that got us hooked
It was in July this year that The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, wore a little blue dress that charmed the world. The Bridget Bardot-esque ice blue full-skirted dress from Preen by Thornton Bregazzi that the Duchess wore without any embellishments (at an event at the Natural History Museum) stole the show, and prompted this piece: why the little blue dress is the new little black dress. Since then, Kate has worn several other blue dresses, the most recent being in the 2017 holiday card released by Kensington Palace where the royal wears a powder blue power suit by Catherine Walker. Other celebrities aren't shying away either. Singer and actress Zendaya (who stars in the Greatest Showman that releases later this month) has been seen in one, actress Alicia Vikander, Hailey Baldwin, have all made a case for it. Back home, resident fashionistas Sonam Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor and Kriti Sanon have ditched black for blue. Here's how to get on the bandwagon.

Reann Moradian

'Stand out in a crowd with electric blue'
The trick, says freelance stylist Reann Moradian, is to have a well-tailored and extremely well-fitted dress. The silhouette doesn't matter if the dress fits perfectly and hugs you in all the right places, adds Moradian who has styled Esha Gupta and Aishwarya Rai. Moradian adds that among the celebs to take blue inspiration from is Blake Lively. "She does a lot of blue! From cocktail dresses, casual ones, and even on the red carpet." For Moradian though, electric blue is the way to go. "It just can be spotted from anywhere," she says.

Sonam Kapoor

'It slims you down, much like black'
"Karisma Kapoor, Esha Gupta and Kriti Sanon have worn beautiful Amit Aggarwal dresses in blue and they all looked absolutely stunning. Also, how can one not lust after the blue Rimzim Dadu sari that Sonam Kapoor wore to Cannes this year. Yes, I have a thing for metallic finish," says Charu Gaur, editor, Runway Square.

She feels it's regal, has an air of mystery about it and is utterly gorgeous. "What works in its favour is that it stands out in a sea of black dresses at a party and yet offers all the perks of an LBD - the fact that it's a colour that will slim you down. Just take care of your make-up and accessories. Keep them simple and classy. Overdo any of it and your outfit can go wrong."

Alia Bhatt

'Maybe, try a denim bodycon!'
"Alia Bhatt's Royal blue Atelier Zuhra dress was stunning. I loved how gracefully she carried the colour and outfit. The natural make up, and hair really brought out the colour of the dress," said Bhavana Pandey, co-founder of LoveGen.

But Pandey loves denim and feels nothing says blue like a well-fitted denim piece - from a skirt to a dress or even a cool bomber. "I think a fitted dark blue denim bodycon would look fabulous for New Year."

Kiara Advani

'Blue adds glamour and sexiness'
Designer Nandita Mahtani is partial to Kiara Advani's look - a slip dress in shades of blue sequins - in this piece from her new party edit. It's an elegant yet exciting colour.

Nandita Mahtani

"Blue is an extremely easy and versatile colour. Casually, it's a wardrobe essential - denim to shirt dresses to basic tees, navy is a must. Formally, turquoise and royal blue are also colours of the season and ideal for a night out, bringing a sense of sexiness and glamour to simple silhouettes."
