One of Delhi’s oldest rock bands, Them Clones, is waiting to make Mumbai roar to its songs

Be it 15 years or five weeks, a band survives only till it churns out new music. If that stops, it may be trouble,” says keyboardist Akshay Raheja of Delhi band Them Clones, who will be performing in the city this week. 

Formed in 2000, the band, made up of Akshay, Prithwish Dev on vocals, Joseph Lalhmachhuana on guitars and Surojit Dev on drums, is famous for a mix of rock riffs and pop-laden melodies. If Zephyretta is a sweet love song, Mediocre has a fun grungy sound, and Speak When I’m Gone is much like that classic rock song.

“The core vibe has been the same for 15 years, but we have made sure we keep adding fresher perspective to our songs. For example, we have DJ Jayant Luthra playing with us for a few tracks, just so we get a new sound. He has remixed a couple of our tracks,” says Surojit. For the Mumbai crowd, they are going to play a mix of their classic hits along with more recent material, and even though they always thought Mumbai was more about the metal scene, they feel that’s changing. “We played at the show where Slash recently played, and to hear people singing along was surreal,” says Surojit, to which Prithwish adds, “In my head, the Mumbai crowd is associated with making a loud roar. I love that. I just hope our show can drum up that loud, manic roar. That’s what it is about.”
