A play based on writer Lokenath Bhattacharya’s novel, looks at the sinister world through a comical lens

Bundelkhand ki Virgin Machhliyan: A play based on today's sinister world

It's a story that needs to be told -- reflective of the current times, Bundelkhand ki Virgin Machhliyan is based on the novel The Virgin fish of Babughat by Bengali writer Lokenath Bhattacharya. The story is set in a concentration camp where all the luxuries of life are available, including abundance of sex. However, no one has choices here. "The play is a political satire and looks at the world through a comic lens. We talk about how surveillance has engulfed our lives and to show this, we have also used live filming techniques in the play," informs writer-director Sharmistha Saha.

The play is being staged by Qissa Kothi

Performed by Qissa Kothi, a mix of artistes, researchers, art enthusiasts, the virgin fish in the novel, in fact, refers to a tasty fish in Bengal, denoting commodification of women. "Before working on this play, we tried to understand the issues plaguing our world, where murders, rapes and censorship are now being normalised," says Saha.

She adds, "The audience is aware of what’s happening around and is ready to interact and open up. Hopefully, our play won’t be banned. I say this because of the tirade on the arts in general today. We live in a surreal world, where it has become normal to kill because cows have turned into mothers. Oh, and in between -- how are our mothers?"

Fortunately, she says, the play will end on a happy note. "At the end of the day, we promise the audience will go back happy about a world that never gives up on itself," says Saha.
