Russian tennis beauty Maria Sharapova wore a dress made from recycled plastic bottles at The Fashion Awards in London recently. According to www.wwd.com, the former World No. 1’s dress was created by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen.

The sustainable dress, named the Mimesis, is designed with fabric made from water bottles and organic silk. Praising the team for their hard work, Sharapova wrote on Instagram: “One year in the making, with fabric sourced from hundreds of recycled @evianwater bottles, 800+ hours of hand work by @irisvanherpen & team. Incredible to see the hard work come alive!!”

Meanwhile, the designer van Herpen said in a statement: “Designing a couture dress with a fabric created from Evian bottles has enabled us to join forces and create a stunning garment that aims to inspire and encourage plastic recycling. I hope this dress will shape people’s perception of upcycling and recycling plastic by reinforcing the different forms the product life cycle can take.”
