Alex Silveira, the former India runner, passed away following a brief illness on Thursday evening. 


Silveira, 88, fondly known as Aloo, was part of the famous Indian 4×400m relay team that also comprised Milkha Singh, JB Joseph and Joginder Singh in the 1950s.

A Western Railway man, Silveira represented India at the Tokyo Asian Games in 1958 and the Cardiff Commonwealth Games, the same year.

He was unjustifiably left out for the Melbourne and Rome Olympics in 1956 and 1960 respectively.
