Boxers Simranjeet Kaur and Lovlina Borgohain look to thrive in Dubai

After recovering from COVID-19, India women's boxers Simranjeet Kaur (60kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) eye glory at Asian Boxing Championship

India's Tokyo-bound women boxers Simranjeet Kaur (60kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), who fought their battle against the deadly Coronavirus, are now looking forward to make a mark at the  Asian Boxing Championship (May 24-June 1) in Dubai. 

While Kaur, who recently recovered from COVID-19, aims for gold at the event, Borgohain is looking to get some match practice before the quadrennial event in Tokyo.  

The Dubai event was to be held in New Delhi, but got shifted with the rise of COVID-19 cases in the capital.

Kaur, 25, who won silver at the 2019 Asian Boxing Championship in Bangkok (Thailand) wants to change the colour of the medal in Dubai. "It's been a challenging year for everyone due to unprecedented circumstances life has put us in. Despite that, we have trained very well over the past one year. We have also got tournament exposure. I couldn't win a gold medal in the last edition [2019] and had to be content with a silver. I want to change the colour of the medal this time and come back with a gold medal. I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring," remarked Kaur.

Meanwhile, Borgohain, who missed out on the Europe tour last year due to a COVID-19 infection, managed some exposure when she participated in the Boxam event in Spain last March. Having trained at the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune before heading for the Asian event, Borgohain, 23, said: "It was a challenging year for all of us. I trained very hard throughout the year, but playing in a major competition is an all together different feeling. I tested positive for COVID-19 before the exposure tour last year and couldn't go. I did participate in the Boxam international in March. Now, this tournament is a massive boost for me as I will get the much-needed match practice before a big event like the Olympics. I am raring to go.”
