Rohit Desai couldn’t have asked for a better debut. The 13-year-old off-spinner claimed a fifer as Mumbai U-14 dominated proceedings on the opening day of their West Zone three-day game against Gujarat at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday.

Off-spinner Rohit Desai took 5-51.

The visitors were bundled out for 150 thanks largely to Rohit’s efforts, after Mumbai opted to field after winning the toss. The hosts then ended the day at 131-2 — trailing by merely 19 runs. Although Arjun, son of Sachin Tendulkar, gave the team its first breakthrough by claiming the wicket of Tanush Gosai in the 11th over, it was Rohit who shone with the ball.

“I was hoping to do well, but I never imagined it would be a fifer on debut. At the moment, I am just too happy to think about anything else,” Rohit said. Having restricted their opponents, Mumbai were off to a flying start. Openers Arjun and Ritik Sharma smashed the Gujarat bowlers all over the park.

Arjun, who was dismissed for 36, accumulated 32 runs in boundaries, while his partner hit six fours in his 33-ball 29. However, skipper Vaishnav Narvekar (batting 16) and Hasheer Dafedar (batting 39) ensured no more damage.
