Beaver Creek (USA) : In her mind’s eye, American ski queen Lindsey Vonn wins every ski race she enters. But despite being the favourite in the downhill and super-G at the world championships her best efforts didn’t pay off with a victory in either of the speed events this week.

Vonn, who recently became the winningest woman in World Cup history, finished fifth in Friday’s downhill behind winner Tina Maze. Three days earlier she was placed third in the super-G.
“I visualised the course 1,000 times. I did everything I normally do and more,” Vonn said of her downhill run on Friday.
“I just wasn’t a great run. It was a good run — a top five — just not good enough for a medal. I fought the whole way down.” Vonn said the course conditions had changed since Tuesday’s super-G, resulting in faster speeds and bumpier terrain. Racers were greeted with sunny skies at the Colorado resort compared to windy conditions three days earlier.
“Today, with the faster speeds. my timing was a bit off,” Vonn said.
