The event for men and women is being held at the Don Bosco High School courts in Matunga.
The Maharashtra men turned over a 14-17 deficit in the first quarter to snatch a slender 27-26 lead at the end of the first half.
Siddhant Shine, with 20 points, top-scored for Maharashtra and Amit Gahlot chipped in with 17 points, while for Punjab Palpreet Singh scored 25 points and Gurinder Singh 14.
This was the second successive defeat for Punjab after they had been shocked by debutants Bhavnagar Youngsters 56-66 on Sunday night.
