Mumbai: Pavan Shah could barely hold his bat, but the Maharashtra U-14 skipper ensured he set an example of grit and determination for his teammates.

Leading from the front, Pavan slammed a 238-ball 192 as the visitors scored 320 on Day Two of the last league match of the West Zone U-14 tie against Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday.

Mumbai, in reply, were 277 for four at stumps on the penultimate day. Mumbai's Hashir Dafedar and Atharva Ankolekar are batting on 97 and 71 respectively.

It will be Mumbai's first championship this season if they can get the first innings lead today and Baroda do not win outright against Gujarat. Pavan, a product of the Dilip Vengsarkar Academy in Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune, played through pain in his swollen hands.

"I injured my right hand while blocking a yorker in the match, and on the night before the match, I hurt the fingers on my other hand when I accidentally jammed them in the door of my hotel room," said Pavan, who batted for over five hours.

Former India skipper, Vengsarkar, meanwhile, was elated. "Pavan is a fine talent. Hashir, who's been with the Dilip Vengsarkar Foundation at Oval Maidan for a decade now, is also doing well. There's a lot of talent to tap in Pune and we are just doing that," he said.
