Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh won his first ever gold medal in international competition after clinching the 75 kg title in the fifth Commonwealth Boxing Championships yesterday. However, the fact that he finally managed to listen to India's national anthem atop the podium, mattered more to the Bhiwani boxer.
"In Beijing my target was to win any medal. Then, my target was to win gold and for the last year and a half I've been eagerly waiting for the national anthem to be played for me.
"I missed it in the World Championship (where he won silver), but today my wish has been fulfilled. It's a great feeling to hear that anthem on the podium. Now I want to hear it again at the Commonwealth Games," said Vijender, who beat England's Frank Buglioni 13-3 in the 75 kg final.
