Madrid Masters: Nick Kyrgios knocks out Stan Wawrinka in Round 2

Madrid: Australian Nick Kyrgios dumped out 2014 finalist Stan Wawrinka yesterday. Kyrgios saw off the Swiss star with a 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-2) second-round Madrid Masters defeat lasting one and three-quarter hours.

However, World No 1 Novak Djokovic eased into third round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over 19-year-old Croatian Borna Coric yesterday.

Djokovic, who last played in Madrid in 2013, served four double faults, but relied on his return to beat Coric. Wawrinka, the fourth seed, managed 11 aces but was unable to break the Kyrgios serve while losing his own four times. “It was generally a good match, I had chances in the first set,” Wawrinka said. “He was serving well in the big moments. He played better on a few important points. His serve was tough to read. It was a high-level match but a few points can make the difference.”

Gavrilova in quarters
Meanwhile, Australian woman tennis player Daria Gavrilova stunned Czech Petra Kvitova at the Madrid Open pre-quarterfinals. The Australian, World No 39, upset No 6 Kvitova 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes, reports Efe. Gavrilova advanced to the tournament quarter-finals for her first participation in Madrid to face Louisa Chirico.
