Kavita Raut

Kavita Raut completed the women's half marathon event at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon in one hour, 19 minutes and 50 seconds but little did she imagine that she would lose the race against time to catch her train to Chiplun yesterday.

The Asian Games medallist was leaving for Chiplun on the 11:40 am Netravati Express from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to start her training for the National Games, which will be held in Kerala from January 31.

Immediately after answering her share of questions from journalists, Kavita and her husband excused themselves from the half marathon winners' press conference (around 9:45 am) at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh in CST to rush towards Hotel Trident in Nariman Point.

"I had to rush to get my luggage from the hotel room. But unfortunately I was not able to get to my hotel before 10:45 am. It was then that I realised, it was impossible for me to make it to the station in time for the train," she told mid-day.

Miscalculation
When asked why she didn't book a later train, Raut said, "I didn't want to disturb my Monday morning training schedule. I booked the morning train keeping in mind that I will complete the race by 7:30 am and will leave for the hotel at 8 am," she said.

"I didn't realise that I will have to wait so long for the post-race conference," Nashik-based Raut added.

She eventually took the 3:20 pm train to Chiplun. "Our schedule has been very hectic throughout the day. We didn't even have proper time to have food or water. We now don't even have a confirmed ticket of the Matsyagandha Express," Raut's husband Mahesh Tungar said.
