The 'breaking news' attracted 485 retweets and 651 favorites. The Danish star fired in another: "I want to thank all of you for the amazing support over the years, it's been truly amazing! It wouldn't have been the same without you!"

This sent her fans and management team in a tizzy before she calmed all those nerves with Tweet No 3, which read, "Had my agents sweat it a little this morning. gotta love April fools #sorrynotsorry #noretirementjustyet." Wozniacki has 829,000 Twitter followers.

Apart from Wozniacki, some sports fans were also fooled when a website put out a story about Sachin Tendulkar taking over as India coach from outgoing Zimbabwean coach Duncan Fletcher.
