Rio de Janeiro: American swimmer Ryan Lochte has been charged by Brazilian police for making a false statement claiming that he was robbed during the recent Rio Olympics.

The 32-year-old has also been issued with a court summons, according to a statement from Brazil’s civil police, reports Xinhua.

Even if Lochte is not present at the court hearing, he could be tried and faces a penalty of up to 18 months in jail.
