India's gold medal-winning boxer Vikas Krishan (60Kg) not only out punched his Chinese opponent Hu Qing to clinch top honours but also outsmarted him in the ring at the Foshan Lingnan Mingzhou Gymnasium here yesterday.

After Round One finished 1-1 and Krishan was trailing 3-2 mid-way through the second round, the Chinese began pushing the Indian down in a bid to subdue him. However, Krishan smartly went to the ground inadvertently creating an impression on the mind of Kazakhstani referee Bedaly Alymkulov. Moments later Qing punched Krishan in the lower abdomen area and again the Indian crouched and once again went down, this time holding his lower-abdomen. The referee immediately awarded a two-point penalty against the Chinese for hitting below the belt. This led to the score reading 4-3 in favour of the Indian. Thereafter, Krishan adopted an intelligent defensive approach rarely letting his guard down. Both boxers got a point each in Round Four and Krishan emerged a 5-4 winner.u00a0 For an 18-year-old the maturity shown by Krishan is impressive. It's no wonder then that World No 1 boxer Vijender Singh is all praise for the man, who also hails from his hometown Bhiwani in Haryana and also from his club the Bhiwani Boxing Club.
