What definitely stood out in the entire 120 minutes of play was India's display of grit and determination to bounce back stronger. Minutes after India conceded, the side were more dominating in their approach putting on an attacking display. As a result of this spirit, the Blue Tigers were able to score an incredible team goal to restore parity in the game.
The problem of perfect finishing has been persistent in the squad throughout the tournament, as they are often seen missing some incredible chances in the final third. Sunil Chhetri appears to be in for a lot of pressure for converting chances, and it is high time that other players put in their optimum contribution in the goal-scoring department
The Blue Tigers' stupendous win over Kuwait showed why Indian football is in the midst of a revolution. From losing to Kuwait 9-1 about a decade ago to defeating them in the SAFF Championship 2023, is something that every India will cherish.
Before the shootout drama, Kuwait held a slight edge as they pressed forward for goals often in the first half. The relentlessness fetched the desired result in the 14th minute. Mobarak Al Faneeni released Abullah Al Bloushi on the left wing with a deft pass. Al Bloushi found Shabaib Al Khaldi inside the box with an accurate cross which the latter slotted past India custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to give Kuwait 1-0 lead.
Despite conceding a goal early, India’s defence was commendable throughout the entire 120 minutes of play. The pairing of Sandesh Jhingan and Mehtab Singh did a commendable job whilst being under immense pressure, courtesy the Kuwaiti attack. Also, credit goes to Akash Mishra and Nikhil Poojary for their tireless shift on either flanks.
