France’s bid for men’s Olympic football glory got off to a nightmare start with a 1-4 defeat by Mexico on Thursday, while Richarlison scored a hat-trick as reigning champions Brazil beat Germany in a six-goal thriller. 


Mexico took the lead through Alexis Vega, before Sebastian Cordova doubled their advantage. France captain Andre-Pierre Gignac pulled one back from the penalty spot. But Uriel Antuna and Eduardo Aguirre netted late on for Mexico. 


Meanwhile, Brazil downed Germany 4-2 in a dramatic match which saw forward Richarlison net a first-half hat-trick. In another match, Argentina were stunned 2-0 by Australia on Thursday. Australia took the lead through Lachlan Wales in the 14th minute. Marco Tilio secured the victory in the 80th minute.
