But Van Gaal still thinks that if he can guide his Reds to a Champions League place, the club's top brass will keep him for the third and final year of his contract. The omens do not look good for the Dutchman though, as United have pointedly not denied negotiating with former Chelsea boss Mourinho.


United are also six points behind Manchester City, who are currently in the fourth and final Champions League place, so it would still need a big turnaround in domestic results - or winning the Europe League, which also secures a spot in UEFA's No 1 club competition. But Mirror Sport can reveal some agents enquiring about future moves for next season are still being told that United remain committed to Van Gaal - as long as he delivers a top four finish . The 64-year-old has become increasingly frustrated at the doubts over his future and is likely to be incensed by the growing belief that Mourinho will take charge.
