Pune are the third ISL team to have a strategic partnership with a European club — Spain's Atletico Madrid are part owners of Atletico de Kolkata and Delhi Dynamos are tied-up with Dutch giants Feyenoord. Fiorentina's association with the Pune club is, however, not just restricted to using their brand name.
"We were not looking for a partner from whom we just wanted to take marketing rights, we wanted someone, who would be a serious technical partner.
Their vision, their desire to win and their work ethos were the key factors why we chose to Fiorentina," Gaurav Modwel, CEO and spokesperson of FC Pune City, told mid-day yesterday.
"They own a 15% stake, but apart from pumping in money, they are getting us the entire coaching staff. Thanks to them, we have signed Franco Colomba (ex-Napoli coach) as our coach. They are also helping us pick the foreign players," Modwel added.
