Cristiano Ronaldo said Manchester United have time to get things right in the Champions League after his injury-time equaliser salvaged a 2-2 draw away to Atalanta on Tuesday. A point keeps United on top of Group F and on course for the last 16 despite a series of disjointed performances bailed out by late Ronaldo goals.

‘Good result’

Ronaldo, 36, also scored late winners at home to Villarreal and Atalanta. “We believed until the end. I helped my team get one point,” said Ronaldo. “We never give up, it’s a good result for us I think.”

United crashed out at the group stages last season, but had much higher expectations after the signings of Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer transfer window.

However, Ronaldo claimed the new signings are still bedding in as Varane limped off with the recurrence of a groin injury and Sancho was again left out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“We have to adapt to each other,” he added. “It will take time, we have time to improve.” Meanwhile, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compared Ronaldo’s talismanic influence at Manchester United to NBA legend Michael Jordan.

For the third time in four Champions League games since returning for a second spell at Old Trafford, Ronaldo rescued United with a late goal. Ronaldo, 36, also scored late winners at home to Villarreal and Atalanta, when United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 two weeks ago.

Michael Jordan moment

“Ronaldo is one of the best that’s ever played this game. I’m sure this is the same feeling Chicago Bulls got with Michael Jordan,” said Solskjaer, referring to the American star who won six NBA titles in two spells with the Bulls.

“If you want the ball to fall to someone in the last minute, Cristiano is the one. He’s done it so many times for us and I’m okay with him scoring more goals than me.”
Ronaldo’s double took him past Solskjaer’s 126 goals for the club.
