Title more important than goals, says Liverpool's Luis Suarez

Striker is a goal away from breaking legend Ian Rush's 30-goal record for Liverpool, but says winning honours for Kops is a bigger motivation than personal milestones

Liverpool: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who is all set to clinch the Premier League Golden Boot, is just one goal away from becoming the first Reds player to score 30 league goals in a season since Ian Rush in the mid-80s.

However, the Uruguayan said yesterday that his motivation is more towards helping his team win the English Premier League rather than eyeing personal glory, ahead of Sunday's crucial vital Anfield clash with Manchester City.

The star striker is also three goals away (with five matches to go) from beating the Premier League’s scoring record (from 38 games) jointly held by Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo on 31.

“If I wanted to do that (score more goals), I could ask Stevie (Gerrard) if I could take a penalty, but I’m not like that,” Suarez told liverpoolfc.co.uk

“For myself, it is more important that Liverpool finish in a good position. I try in every game to score because I am a striker. I love to make goals, but if I could swap being top scorer or winning the Golden Boot for the team finishing in the top four or winning the league — that would be more important. Of course it would be special (to break the record) too.”

Liverpool are currently on top of the EPL table with 74 points from 33 games, while Chelsea are second (72 pts from 33 games) and Manchester City are third (70 pts from 31 games) with two games in hand.
