MSSA Football: way to go, St Paul's

A superb brace by Atharva Rewale coupled with a goal from Yash Nikalje helped St Paul's High School (Dadar) win the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA)-organised boys under-14 Division III inter-school football title with a 3-1 win over St Xavier's High School (Goregaon) at Azad Maidan yesterday.

St Paul's opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Yash fed a good cross to Atharva, who was positioned at the half-line mark. Without wasting any time, the wily striker dispatched the ball with a thunderous long range shot into the net. In the 14th minute, Yash ensured St Paul's lead was doubled. St Xavier's managed to score in the 21st minute, courtesy striker Aditya Singh. Switching sides, St Paul's Atharva scored his second goal in the 34th minute off a free kick. Coach Malcolm Blakely was very pleased with the team's performance: "We wanted to reach the final and win it right from Day One. I have been working hard with them on their set pieces, corner shots and accuracy since the last one month. It has eventually paid off today."

Meanwhile, a brilliant hat-trick from Aryaman Tandon along with a goal each by Anirudh Fadia and Vansh Bhatia helped Dhirubhai Ambani International School (Bandra) thrash St John the Evangelist High School (Andheri) 5-1 to clinch the third place tie.
