The La Liga has traditionally been a two-horse race with Real Madrid and Barcelona almost always fighting for top honours and that's the reason the league probably plays second fiddle to the English Premier League which has at least five or six team that can vie for the title.
However, instead of sweating over this, the La Liga management takes this in a positive way. "Why don't we look at it the other way round? Messi and Ronaldo are the engines that are driving La Liga, so it's a great thing," La Liga's Area Audiovisual Director, Melcior Soler Sala told journalists here who are part of the La Liga Santander Experience. The success story of Atletico Madrid and now Sevilla further drive home the point that Messi and Ronaldo sure are doing a great job at engineering La Liga forward.
Football can only unite
The biggest South American rivalry is considered to be between Brazil and Argentina, but interestingly that's not the whole truth. Brazil legend Pele and former Argentine superstar Diego Maradona have accentuated this rivalry but even before their existence, there's been another very fierce South American rivalry between the two countries. Both being neighbouring countries have a lot of common factors which makes the rivalry spicier. Even today, their fans hate each others. But interestingly, club football has helped in healing the wounds, say Juan Manuel Martinez of Uruguay and Miguel Fiordelli of Argentina in unison.
"Look at Luis Suarez, who is Uruguayan and shares striking space with Argentina's Lionel Messi.
Together they create magic and when Barcelona play, I'm sure both Uruguayan and Argentine fans cheer as one," said Juan.
