But they were left to rue a pedestrian performance with little goal threat from Mario Balotelli, who was hauled off in the second half.

Spurs frustrated
Meanwhile, Tottenham twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Southampton.

Graziano Pelle twice put Southampton ahead, only for Spurs to level through Erik Lamela and then Nacer Chadli.
