Aguero was the headline act in a memorable encounter as Manuel Pellegrini's second-placed team closed the gap on Chelsea to two points ahead of the leaders' trip to Crystal Palace later on Saturday.

The Argentina forward opened the scoring in the 13th minute and then struck from the penalty spot seven minutes later after Christian Eriksen's 15th-minute equaliser.

Referee Jon Moss awarded the third penalty of the match in the 62nd minute when Martin Demichelis tripped Tottenham's Roberto Soldado, with replays indicating the offence took place outside the penalty area.

However, Spanish striker Soldado fluffed the chance to equalise as his spot-kick was saved by Joe Hart. Moss gave his fourth penalty in the 68th minute when Federico Fazio pulled back Aguero, a foul that also earned the Argentine defender a red card on his Premier League debut.

Aguero, who is now City's record scorer in the Premier League era with 61 goals in 95 appearances, stroked home the penalty and sealed the one-man demolition job in the 75th minute.

Welbeck's rescue act
Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck earned Arsenal a point in a 2-2 draw at home to Hull on Saturday as the teams met for the first time last season's FA Cup final. At Wembley, Hull took a 2-0 lead before being beaten 3-2 in extra-time and this game saw them almost take all three points at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea win
Chelsea maintained their five-point advantage at the head of the Premier League after goals from Oscar and Cesc Fabregas secured a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday in a game where both sides were reduced to ten men. Oscar's sixth minute free-kick sent Chelsea on their way and Fabregas' 51st-minute goal ensured they had a cushion.

Everton's first home win
Everton crushed Aston Villa 3-0 to finally secure their first home Premier League win of the season at Goodison Park.

Saints record 8-0 win
Southampton recorded the biggest top-flight victory in their history on Saturday, thrashing Sunderland 8-0 at St Mary's to hold onto third place. The in-form Graziano Pelle scored twice while Dusan Tadic, another of Ronald Koeman's impressive summer signings, scored one and set up four more in a remarkable show.
