West Indies won the toss and captain Kraigg Brathwaite elected to bat first. He, along with Tagenarine Chanderpaul, opened for WI. However, Ravichandran Ashwin took both wickets early in the game and the openers left at 20 and 12 respectively without making a major impact.
With Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s wicket, Ashwin became the first Indian bowler to dismiss a father-son duo in Tests. He had dismissed Tagenarine’s father Shivnarine Chanderpaul in 2011.
West Indies’ Test debutant Alick Athanaze made an impression with 47 runs off 99 balls before being dismissed by Ashwin, caught by Shardul Thakur. Indian bowlers were quick to dismiss the WI tail as the hosts were bowled out at an underwhelming 150 in 64.3 overs.
Ravichandran Ashwin achieved several milestones including completing 700 international wickets. He took a five-for on the first day, proving his expertise in the format. Ravindra Jadeja also produced a noticeable performance as he took three wickets for 26 runs. Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur took one wicket each.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Test debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal opened for India. Both put up an impressive show, amassing 30*(65) and 40*(73) respectively. The visitors scored 80 runs for no loss as they took control of the opening day.
