Iyer fails again, but top-order ensures India ‘D’ post 306-5

The under-pressure Shreyas Iyer’s dismal run continued but strong performances from the other frontline batters, including Sanju Samson, guided India ‘D’ to 306-5 on the opening day of their Duleep Trophy match against India ‘B’ here on Thursday. Iyer, aiming to make a comeback to India’s Test squad, fell for a second successive duck in the ongoing tournament.  However, Devdutt Padikkal (50), Srikar Bharat (52), Ricky Bhui (56) and Samson (89 not out) smashed half-centuries as India ‘D’ batters produced a solid show. Also Read: Momentum has shifted in India’s favour: Hasan At stumps, Samson and Saransh Jain (26) were at the crease. For India ‘B’, leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (3-60) was the standout bowler.  Meanwhile, Shashwat Rawat led India ‘A’s dramatic recovery with an unbeaten 122 to steer them to 224-7 on Day One of the Duleep Trophy tie against India ‘C’ here on Thursday. The left-handed batter, who plays for Baroda in domestic cricket, got support only from Shams Mulani (44 off 76) after India ‘A’ were reduced to 36-5 in the 20th over. Last match’s centurion Pratham Singh, captain Mayank Agarwal, Tilak Varma and Riyan Parag all fell in single digits. Pacer Anshul Kamboj (3-40), who took eight wickets in an innings last week, was again the standout bowler for India ‘C’.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Momentum has shifted in India’s favour: Hasan

Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud, who dismissed India’s  Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill in the first session on Day One of the first Test here on Thursday, believes the momentum has shifted in favour of the hosts.  “I think in the morning, the ball zipped on the pitch. Later, the wicket got settled and the ball was coming on to the bat nicely. We [fast bowlers] were trying to dominate from morning, but the wicket has improved a lot now. So, we are trying to minimise the runs and the boundary,” Mahmud said at a press conference after the opening day. Also Read: Half-tons by Williamson, Latham take NZ to 255-4 “The momentum was with us at one point, but now it has shifted to the other side. Anything can happen. Tomorrow, we get another chance and we will try to work on it,” added the Mahmud, 24, who was born into a farmer’s family in a village near Chattogram. He was rated by South African pace great Allan Donald and former West Indies speedster Ottis Gibson as the best fast bowler to have come out of the country.  Both Donald and Gibson had been part of the team’s coaching staff in the past. Mahmud showed why he’s rated so highly during Bangladesh’s historic Test series sweep in Pakistan recently, and he did an encore on Thursday against a far better batting line-up.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Half-tons by Williamson, Latham take NZ to 255-4

Half-centuries from Tom Latham and Kane Williamson put New Zealand at 255-4 and in hot pursuit of Sri Lanka on Day Two of the first Test on Thursday.  The Black Caps trailed by 50 at stumps in Galle with Daryl Mitchell (41) and Tom Blundell (18) to resume in the morning. No New Zealander has scored a Test century in Galle and both Williamson and Latham looked set to end that drought before falling against the run of play.  Also Read: IND vs BAN 1st Test | "Happy to take Virat Kohli out, because he is best batsman in the world": Hasan Mahmud Their 73-run partnership steadied the reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings of 305 but ended when Latham fell before tea for 70, top-edging a sweep shot that was caught at backward square leg.  World No.2 batter Willamson departed in the final session for 55 while trying to work Dhananjaya de Silva on the leg-side for a single, caught by wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. Sri Lanka belatedly resumed their first innings from 302-7 overnight but lost all three remaining wickets for just three runs. "Happy to take Kohli out, because he is best batsman in the world": Mahmud

It’s been a great last month for Bangladesh cricket. And for their fast-bowling fraternity. Twice in Rawalpindi against Pakistan, inspired by their inexperienced but impressively skilled pacers, Bangladesh found ways to escape from tight spots to carve out sensational victories. In the first Test, after Mushfiqur Rahim’s monumental 191 helped the visitors open up a first-innings lead of 117, they rode on early strikes from Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana and sustained success from spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz to send the hosts crashing to 146 all out and eventually completing a ten-wicket victory. A week later, Mahmud and Rana, both playing their respective third Tests, accounted for nine Pakistani second-innings wickets to orchestra another stunning collapse and set up a six-wicket triumph that helped them complete a historic 2-0 sweep on Pakistani soil. Skillful pace battery Hitherto largely a land of spin, Bangladesh are now putting together a pace attack capable of holding its own anywhere in the world. Two of their premier pacers, Shoriful and Ebadot Hossain, are out injured, yet Bangladesh summoned the depth to rattle India, reducing them to 144 for six on Day One of the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium until the hosts rallied to reach 339 without further damage on Thursday. Also Read: Fantashtic! The most impressive of the visiting quicks was Mahmud, not the quickest but definitely highly skillful. Presented with unusually favourable conditions—good bounce, rare moisture on live grass and considerable seam movement—he feasted on the uncertainty in the minds of India’s gun top-order to fire out Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant. Taskin off the boil Taskin Ahmed, the leader of the pace pack and the most experienced of the three, was a little off the boil, but Rana, who had arrived riding the wave of a hype for his extreme pace (145 kmph) and towering stature (six feet five inches) immediately showed what he is capable of. India were hopping and scrapping; there was none of the ‘fear’ Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha had alluded to two days back, but India were certainly given a wake-up call that R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja responded admirably to. “My plan was simple,” Mahmud, who ended the day with four for 58 from 18 terrific overs, said later.  “With the new ball, I was bowling to my strength. What I can do, I kept doing it all the time, and I got success with that. Whenever you take a wicket, it’s reason to be happy, doesn’t matter who the batsman is.  ‘Happy to dismiss Kohli’ But I was very happy to take him [Virat Kohli] out because he is the best batsman in the world currently.” More will certainly be heard of Mahmud and Rana, 24 and 21 respectively and with almost their entire cricketing lives ahead of them.

Fantashtic!

On a day of two dazzlingly contrasting halves, R Ashwin conjured the perfect homecoming at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.  The opening day of India’s first Test of the home season went pear-shaped inside the first hour when, on a strikingly atypical Indian surface with considerable bounce and generous seam movement, Hasan Mahmud ripped the heart out of the top order. Put in by Najmul Hasan Shanto, India slumped to 34-3, rallied briefly through a fourth-wicket alliance of 62 between Yashasvi Jaiswal and comeback man Rishabh Pant, then lost three more wickets to find themselves staring down the barrel at 144-6. Ash gets big reception Enter Ashwin, to a rapturous reception from the 10,371-strong gathering at a ground where he cut his teeth in representative cricket. In his last Test outing at this venue, against England in February 2021, the strapping right-hander brought up his fifth Test hundred; three and a half years later, he blazed to a sixth three-figure knock, an authoritative effort to celebrate his 38th birthday, which fell on Tuesday. Also Read: IND vs BAN 1st Test | "I try to bat according to the requirements of my team": Yashasvi Jaiswal Ashwin couldn’t have done it all on his own. His partner during an unseparated seventh-wicket stand of 195 was spin twin Ravindra Jadeja, who played admirable second fiddle without sacrificing flair or aggression. Ashwin took most of the plaudits for his subliminal timing and great elegance, but Jadeja was hardly shaded as India breezed to 339-6 at the end of an entertaining day’s play. The only downer was that despite the extra half-hour, Bangladesh only bowled 80 overs. With his father Ravichandran in attendance, Ashwin treated the decent audience to a stunning display of stroke-making, standing tall to punch off the back foot, leaning forward to drive handsomely through the covers, working the ball square on the on-side and unleashing the big strokes against the spinners. It was a supreme exhibition of complete control during 174 minutes of near-flawless batting, time enough for him to become the first cricketer in Test history to stack up 20 50-plus scores in addition to 30 five-wicket hauls. Jadeja plays himself in  Realising the mood his partner was in, Jadeja played within himself, feeding Ashwin the strike, but producing several handsome strokes of his own. Consequently, the mood in the respective dressing rooms went from agony to ecstasy [for India] and delight to anguish [for Bangladesh]. The lead-up to the game was dominated by the six-foot-five Nahid Rana, but it was Mahmud, like Rana in his fourth Test, who made the early dents by winkling out Rohit Sharma with a peach, strangling Shubman Gill down leg to a well-crafted plan and eliciting a loose stroke outside off from Virat Kohli. Jaiswal and Pant were unfazed and looked set for the long haul, when the latter threw his hand away against Mahmud and the former became Rana’s first victim. It seemed all doom and gloom then, reflecting the weather, until Ashwin and Jadeja made hay as the sun belatedly broke through. 2No. of centuries scored by R Ashwin in his last two Tests in Chennai (including this one) Brief scoresIndia 339-6 (R Ashwin 102*, R Jadeja 86*, Y Jaiswal 56, R Pant 39; H Mahmud 4-58) v Bangladesh

"I try to bat according to the requirements of my team": Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal curbed his natural flair to make a determined 56 against Bangladesh in seaming conditions here on Thursday, and the young opener said such experiences will make him a stronger, all-weather player in future. Jaiswal’s half century and his 62-run partnership with fellow left-hander Rishabh Pant helped India avoid a total collapse on the first day after getting reduced to 34-3. Also Read: IND vs BAN 1st Test | "Ravindra Jadeja was of real help": Ravichandran Ashwin “It was amazing to go out there and play in these conditions. It will make me strong and I will learn from it as to how to play in all these conditions and how to plan my innings,” Jaiswal told reporters in the post-day press meet. “I try to bat according to the requirements of my team and keep changing my game accordingly. If the wicket falls initially, how can I bat? When the runs are coming, how can I bat?,” he added. Jaiswal conceded that there was some help for the bowlers in the first couple of sessions, warranting a cautious approach from the Indian batters. “Initially, I think the ball was moving a bit and seaming a bit and the wicket was a bit down. So, we took our time. But if you see in the last session, we scored quite well and I think we are in a good position at the moment,” he said. IND vs BAN 1st Test | "Ravindra Jadeja was of real help": Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin’s unbeaten 102 along with Ravindra Jadeja’s 86 not out did wonders for India who were put to bat first in the opening Test by Bangladesh at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. The duo not only turned the tide in their favour, but also complemented each other in the middle to build a 195-run unbeaten stand for the seventh wicket to take India to 339-6 at stumps. Also Read: "Indian team will benefit from what Gambhir is going to bring to the table": Rahul Dravid “It’s an old Chennai surface with a bit of bounce and carry. The red soil pitch allows you to play a few shots if you are willing to just get in line and give it a bit of a tonk when there’s width,” Ashwin told the broadcasters at stumps on Day One. Local man Ashwin credited his partner for boosting his morale in the gruelling Chennai heat. “He [Jadeja] was of real help, there was a point where I was really sweating and getting a bit tired. Jaddu noticed it quickly and guided me through that phase. Jaddu has been one of our best batters for our team in the last few years. Him being there, pretty solid and he was also very helpful in terms of telling me that we don’t have to convert twos into threes which was really helpful for me,” Ashwin said. "Indian team will benefit from what Gambhir is going to bring to table": Dravid

Former Team India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid expressed his views that the side will benefit from the vast experience new head coach Gautam Gambhir possesses. Dravid was speaking at an event in Delhi organised by Roombr. Dravid was appointed as the Team India head coach in November 2021. Under his coaching stint, Team India finished as runners-up in the 2021-2023 ICC World Test Championship and the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup held at home. And then Men in Blue ended their 11-year-long trophy drought by beating South Africa by seven runs to capture their second ICC T20 World Cup title. Answering a media query, Rahul Dravid said the team will benefit from what Gautam Gambhir is going to bring to the table. Also Read: IND vs BAN 1st Test: Ravichandran Ashwin smashes century, India reaches 339 at stumps on Day 1 "I think he has got a lot of experience as a player. He has played a lot. He has obviously coached quite a bit. In any situation one brings his own experiences, knowledge to the table. I am sure the team is going to benefit what Gautam is going to bring to the table along with his team," he said. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as a head coach on July 9, just a few days after Team India's T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. Previously, Gambhir had guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) title as a mentor. Rahul Dravid will make a return to the Rajasthan Royals (RR), but this time as a head coach ahead of the IPL 2025. The former Royals captain and coach spent five seasons with the franchise from 2011 to 2015 and will commence with the team immediately, working with Royals' Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara to implement the franchise's overall cricketing strategy. From 2011-13 seasons, Dravid played 46 matches for the franchise, scoring 1,276 runs at an average of 29.67, with seven fifties. His best score was 66. Rahul Dravid, known as one of the greatest batsmen to represent India started his coaching career in 2014, the time when he served from captain to team's mentor. Since then, Dravid has been involved in various capacities with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), the Indian Men's U19, and the Indian Men's Senior team, leading the nation to the top of the Test, ODI and T20I rankings during his tenure, and topping it up with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup crown recently. Marsh feels this Australian is about to become one of the greatest ODI players

Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh hailed Adam Zampa who is set to make his 100 ODI appearance during the match against England. While talking about him in a news conference, Mitchell Marsh also highlighted Zampa's significant role in the team and his development into one of Australia's premier ODI players. "I think 100 games these days is a really special achievement," Marsh said at the pre-match press conference. "Zamps' (Adam Zampa) career has certainly had its ups and downs, being in and out of the side at times, but the way he's gone about it over the last probably four or five years is commendable," he further added. Mitchell Marsh also highlighted Adam Zampa's growth, both as a cricketer and as an individual. "The person that he's become and, more importantly for us as a team, the cricketer that he's become is something that we're really grateful for. He's certainly tracking towards being one of our greatest ever ODI players," Marsh noted. Also Read: "I always back the underdogs": Ravichandran Ashwin praises Bangladesh's triumph over Pakistan Highlighting Zampa's importance to the team, Mitchell Marsh continued, "There's no hiding the fact that he's one of our go-to men with the ball over a 50-over period. That has been one of the challenges he's taken in his stride over the last few years. He's been that person for us, and he certainly thrives off the bigger moments, which is what all great players do." Mitchell Marsh also lauded Zampa's ability to perform under pressure. "It's a real credit to the way he's gone about his work," he added. So far, featuring in 99 ODI matches, Zampa has claimed 169 wickets with the best bowling figures of five wickets for 35 runs which came against New Zealand in 2022. He also played 92 T20Is and has 111 wickets registered under his name. In the T20I bowlers' rankings, he (662 rating) is just one rating point behind Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga in fifth place, though he remained some way behind England's Adil Rashid in first (721 rating). Zampa expressed his desire to keep playing ODI cricket. "There's been a lot of questions about the ODI format and what that looks [like] going forward. In terms of playing for Australia and that drive, I think every young guy coming through still thinks that's the be-all and end-all. There are obviously those other opportunities in terms of franchise cricket, and that's good. There's been a lot said about how it's a saturated market, but all these different competitions give other guys opportunities," Zampa said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. (With ANI Inputs)
