Suryakumar Yadav’s Parsee Gymkhana teammates raise a toast to his World Cup selection; confident he will find ODIs as run-lucrative as T20 format

Suryakumar Yadav’s Parsee Gymkhana teammates expressed confidence that their club’s batting stalwart, who on Tuesday was included in India’s ODI World Cup squad, will hit the high notes in his third World event.

Suryakumar smashed 239 runs including three half-centuries in the 2022 T20 World Cup Down Under.
The Mumbai man has not found ODI cricket as comfortable as the shortest form of the game, but pundits reckon he has the ability to thrive in this format too.
Former Mumbai batsman and Parsee Gym coach Vinayak Mane said: “Surya will add value to the team in ODIs. Bowlers will get more time to set their spell against Surya, but I am sure he will adapt well to the 50-over format in home conditions. He has played some outstanding innings, so I am sure he will replicate those performances,” Mane told mid-day.
‘Reading situation is key’
Mane advised Suryakumar to continue reading the opponent and situation well. “He should just try and play the way he is playing; read the opponent and situation which he does very well,” Mane added.
Parsee Gym captain Vikrant Auti felt Suryakumar is a complete cricketer. “Even after representing India, he is ready to play for the club when available.

“It’s big for all of us that our player is representing the country in the World Cup. He has the potential to win games on his own and we expect that,” Auti said.
Mumbai left-arm spinner Shams Mulani, who has played with Suryakumar at Parsee Gymkhana, said he is the most dangerous batsman to bowl to in the nets. “He plays with angles and can hit you everywhere. If you don’t concede too many runs and not get hit for too many sixes, it means you are bowling in the right areas to him.
Mulani feels proud
“When I made my Ranji Trophy debut [in 2018] he was a prominent figure in the Mumbai team. He has helped me a lot; we bond well. It feels good that someone who is close to you is getting a chance to play for India at the World Cup. We feel proud and I am confident he will do extremely well.”
Suryakumar’s World Cup selection had Parsee Gymkhana’s vice-president and cricket secretary Khodadad Yazdegardi over the moon. “Surya will be the first cricketer from Parsee Gym to play in an ODI World Cup. It’s a very proud moment for the club president Mehli Golvala and myself. We have seen Surya grow at Parsee Gym since 2011. His progress has been phenomenal,” said Yazdegardi.
The ICC T20 No. 1 batsman has represented the country in one Test, 26 ODIs and 53 T20I games. When asked how Suryakumar, 32, should adjust to the 50-over format, Yazdegardi opined that Suryakumar should watch how he batted during his 2021 ODI debut series in Sri Lanka, where he scored 124 runs in three games.
“If Surya goes into bat from the 15th to 20th over, he just needs to take singles first. He was the Man of the Series in his debut ODI series. He should just see what he did right over there.“
