Pant clean bowled twice, Kohli plays through pain-free zone in match simulation

India's intra-squad match simulation provided a mix of positives and concerns ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener against Australia in Perth. In overcast conditions at the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), India ramped up preparations for the gruelling opening Test, set to begin next week. With uncertainty surrounding skipper Rohit Sharma's participation in the first Test, KL Rahul opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, according to ESPNcricinfo. Rahul looked assured during his time at the crease. The experienced batter treaded carefully and handled short balls well until a Prasidh Krishna bouncer struck his elbow, requiring medical attention. The 32-year-old left the field and did not return as India's mainstays had another turn at the crease. Jaiswal showcased aggression with a belligerent drive, but his intent was curtailed when he edged a ball to the second slip--a recurring theme during the session. Despite reports of undergoing scans, Virat Kohli appeared in shape, displaying a trademark cover drive. However, on 15, he edged a Mukesh Kumar delivery to the second slip. Kohli later spent about 30 minutes in the nets. Also Read: India have your numbers, Aus! Rishabh Pant showed promise in his innings but was visibly jaded after sustaining a groin injury. He was eventually bowled by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who emerged as a standout performer. Shubman Gill started cautiously, scoring 28 before edging a short delivery to gully. Washington Sundar and Tanush Kotian bowled in tandem as the batting side stood at 106/5 after 28 overs. India's main batters had another opportunity at the crease, with Jaiswal and Gill initially adopting an aggressive approach before reverting to caution under the watchful eyes of the coaches patrolling the boundary line. Jaiswal appeared the most comfortable against short-pitched deliveries, both in the match and net sessions. He was more aggressive against the spinners, reaching an unbeaten 52, while Gill anchored the innings with an unbeaten 42. After the final interval, Kohli and Pant faced a barrage of short deliveries from Prasidh and Nitish. Kohli seemed troubled by a few balls but showed no signs of discomfort, batting for an hour to finish on 30. Pant, in contrast, adopted a proactive approach, stepping down the crease with mixed success before being bowled by Mukesh for the second time that day. Jurel and Akash Deep returned for the final session as the batting side concluded at 339/8 in 75 overs of match simulation.  (With agency inputs)

ICC wants BCCI’s written reasoning for Champions Trophy withdrawal in Pakistan

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially asked for a written explanation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over its decision not to send the Indian team to Pakistan for next year's Champions Trophy, reported Geo News. The development comes after BCCI verbally informed the ICC of its decision not to send the team to Pakistan for next year's marquee event. In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) requested the ICC to provide a copy of India's response, sources told Geo News. "In case of receiving a written reply, Pakistan may seek substantial evidence supporting the reasons," sources told Geo News, adding that the ICC would then have to take a final decision about India after reviewing those reasons. The sources also informed Geo News that if India fails to provide "proper reasons" for not travelling to Pakistan, then they would be asked to travel to the country to participate in the tournament. Also Read: Neil, Ishaan shine in Jamnabai Narsee School’s 347-run win In case India refuses to travel to Pakistan for any reason, another team may come in as a replacement for the mega event, the sources further added. Pakistan are the defending champions of the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy. Amid the uncertainty over India's participation and the tournament schedule, PCB revealed that the trophy tour for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will kick off from Islamabad on November 16. India has firmly opposed travelling to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy, citing 'security concerns'. Earlier this year, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla stated that India would travel to Pakistan only if the Government of India permitted it. Last year, Pakistan hosted the Asian Trophy, but it was held in a hybrid model, with India playing its matches in Sri Lanka. Hosting the Champions Trophy in a hybrid model is also on the cards, but last week, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi claimed that there have been no talks about hosting the tournament in such a fashion. Earlier this week, sources reported that South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerged as possible venues for hosting the Champions Trophy in 2025 if Pakistan pulled out at the last moment. If the tournament is shifted, there are also chances that Pakistan could withdraw from the tournament if ICC moves the tournament to a neutral venue, according to recent reports.  (With agency inputs)

KL Rahul (Pic: File Pic)

"My aim is to get back into T20 team, look forward to this IPL": KL Rahul

Struggling KL Rahul is looking forward to using IPL 2025 as a vehicle to make a comeback in India's T20I side as he wants to remain in the mix for all three formats. KL Rahul will likely open the innings for India if captain Rohit Sharma misses out on the first Test match against Australia ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. KL Rahul's form is a bit concerning for Team India as he was dropped from the last two Tests against New Zealand and was replaced by Sarfaraz Khan. But the batter, who is pleasing to watch when in full flow, remains unperturbed by his lean run of form. "My aim is to obviously get back into the T20 team. I've always wanted to be an all-format player, and that desire and drive haven't changed over the years. I want to still play for India in all three formats and have done that for many years," Rahul told Star Sports. Also Read: Haryana's Anshul Kamboj becomes only third bowler to claim all 10 wickets in Ranji Trophy, WATCH VIDEO "I've been out of the T20 team for a while, and I know where I stand as a player and what I need to do to get back. So, I look forward to this IPL season to give me that platform to enjoy my cricket and play the way I want to," he added. Since 2022, he has scored 514 runs in Tests from 12 matches (21 innings) at an average of 25.7, having registered three half-centuries and a century. During the interaction, Rahul emphasised always keeping the team ahead of his individual aspirations. "All of us as players want to play with freedom, and everyone would think that the way I batted, I'm enjoying playing that. But like I said, my thought process and motivation have always been team first. It doesn't matter what I want to do or what my natural game is. "We play a team sport. If I played tennis, it would be different; I could stick to saying, 'This is my natural game.' But in a team sport, it's very different. Each game, you'll have a different role and responsibility given to you to find a way to deliver for the team," he said. The Bengaluru man's last Test hundred was against South Africa at Centurion in December 2023 and since then made just two fifties in nine innings. (With PTI Inputs)

Tim Southee (Pic: File Pic)

"The time feels right to now step away from the game": Tim Southee

Former New Zealand captain Tim Southee said that the upcoming Test series against England would be his last as the star pacer is set to pull curtains on his career at his home ground in Hamilton. Debuting against England at Napier in 2008, Tim Southee has been the mainstay of Kiwis' bowling since then. He has grabbed 385 wickets in 104 Test appearances and is second to Richard Hadlee (431) among the New Zealand cricketers. "Representing New Zealand was all I ever dreamed of growing up," Tim Southee said. "But the time feels right to now step away from the game that has given so much to me. "Test cricket holds a special place in my heart," he added. "So to be able to play such a big series against the same opponent my Test career began against all those years ago, and on three grounds that are incredibly special to me, seems the perfect way to end my time in the black cap." Under Tim Southee's captaincy, New Zealand have won six matches, lost six and registered two draws. After taking captaincy from Kane Williamson in 2022, Southee handed his captaincy to Tom Latham under who, the "Black Caps" registered a 3-0 Test series sweep against India in India. Also Read: Neil, Ishaan shine in Jamnabai Narsee School’s 347-run win Tim Southee's all-round skills and consistency have seen him become the only player in the world to claim more than 300 Test wickets, 200 ODI wickets and 100 T20 wickets. New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink saluted him as one of the country's finest players. "Tim has been a constant in the improving fortunes of the Blackcaps and he'll be remembered as a giant of the modern New Zealand game," he said. "Tim has an incredible bank of experience and knowledge of the game and while he may have called time on his playing career, I'd be surprised if we don't see him in another capacity at some stage in the future." Southee will make a decision after the three-Test England series, which gets under way in Christchurch on November 28, on whether he has one final white-ball farewell in him. New Zealand face Sri Lanka in three ODIs and three T20s at home from December 28. Blackcaps coach Gary Stead said Southee's record spoke for itself. "Tim's durability and resilience has been outstanding," he said. "He's an incredibly tough competitor who gets himself up for big occasions and is rarely injured. "Tim cares deeply about the team, its reputation and performances, and he will be missed within the Blackcaps environment." (With AFP Inputs)

Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre

Ayush Mhatre’s 2nd Ranji ton takes Mumbai to 253-8

Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre, 17, smashed a commanding second first-class century, steering Mumbai to a strong position against Services on Day Two of their Elite Group ‘A’ Ranji Trophy match at the Air Force ground at Palam here. Mhatre scored 116, studded with 12 boundaries and three sixes, giving the 42-time Ranji Trophy winner a 13-run first innings lead in the match. Mumbai’s innings began on a shaky note in their response to Services’ total of 240. Opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi (1) and Siddhesh Lad (10) fell early to pacer Nitin Yadav, leaving the team reeling at 29 for two. The situation worsened when skipper Ajinkya Rahane (19) was bowled by Varun Choudhary, reducing Mumbai to a precarious 69 for three. However, Mhatre anchored the innings with Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 47 off 46 balls. Earlier, Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur delivered an impressive performance, taking four wickets to wrap up Services’ innings.  Also Read: Shami Australia-bound? Shami Australia-bound?

The beleaguered Indian team could get the Mohammed Shami boost during the challenging Australia tour after the pace-bowling stalwart made an impressive comeback from injury by grabbing four wickets in a Ranji Trophy match on Thursday. Playing his first red-ball game in more than a year, Shami, who represents Bengal, bowled four spells across 57 overs in Madhya Pradesh’s first innings and returned with figures of 19-4-54-4. His victims included MP skipper Shubham Sharma, all-rounder Saransh Jain and two tail-enders, with three of the four batters being bowled while one edged to keeper Wriddhiman Saha. While this is great news for the Indian team, it is understood that the national selection committee will look at how his body holds up in the second innings as well and whether there is any swelling or pain at the end of the game. Boost for Bumrah & Co? If he ticks all the boxes, it is almost assured that he will join forces with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah before the second Test, which will be a day-night affair. The Ranji Trophy match ends on November 16 and he could join the squad before the first Test, beginning in Perth on November 22, but that could be cutting it too fine. Also Read: Gambhir to team: You’ll leave Oz as better cricketers In case Shami goes, he will get to play a two-day day-night practice game against Prime Minister’s XI. More than the wickets he took on Thursday, the team management and national selection committee along with the BCCI’s Sports Science & Medical Team want to check how his body holds up. Shami, who has not played a competitive game after the ODI World Cup final on November 19 last year, had undergone an ankle surgery. Just when he was about to return for the three-Test series against New Zealand, the senior fast bowler developed a swelling in his knee. It is understood that despite naming an 18-member squad for Australia, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee and the team management would include Shami the moment the BCCI’s head of Medical and Sports Science team, Dr Nitin Patel, declares him fit. A Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) source told PTI that national selection committee member Ajay Ratra had specifically come along with NCA medical team head Patel to watch Shami bowl. Their feedback will be sent to chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir before a final call is taken. Vital game for Shami A BCCI source said, “Obviously, Shami was asked to play this game keeping in mind that the next round of Ranji Trophy will only start on January 23 after the Test season is over. “He [Shami] has bowled 19 overs in multiple spells and fielded for most part of the 57 overs. He bowled 90 dot balls. But he will again have to bowl and field [in the second innings]. Suppose he bowls another 15 to 18 overs in the second innings, that’s a very decent amount of overs bowled. “But the biggest test would be whether he again feels any pain after four days. If the NCA medical team green-lights his fitness, obviously he will join before the second Test,” the BCCI source added.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Gambhir to team: You’ll leave Oz as better cricketers

A Test series against Australia is a transformative experience after which an individual “goes back a better cricketer” is what head coach Gautam Gambhir and some of the senior players have shared with the younger members of the team on their first tour ‘Down Under’. It will be a baptism by fire for several young Indian players, with the visitors naming as many as eight members in the squad who have never played a Test match on Australian soil. The likes of Yashaswi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sarfaraz Khan, Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, all of them on their maiden tours will have plenty to prove during the marquee series, starting here from November 22.
