After being a part of the Rajasthan team together, Pradeep Sunderam, 58, and his former ward Ramesh Powar will be pitted against each other for the Mumbai Ranji Trophy coach job when they appear for an interview with the Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) today.

Sunderam, who used the three-day extension to apply for the Mumbai senior team coach's job, will face a stiff challenge from ex-India off-spinner Powar, who played as a professional for Rajasthan in 2013 when Sunderam was the coach.

"It's a good and healthy competition. I am getting an opportunity to be with my student. I have worked with most of the players in Mumbai and played with them too. Ramesh played for Rajasthan when I was the coach in a team led by Hrishikesh Kanitkar in 2013-14. It's a good sign for Mumbai cricket," Sunderam told mid-day
yesterday.

Sunderam coached Mumbai's U-22 side for six years, winning the CK Nayudu Trophy twice. As coach of the West Zone U-19 team, Sunderam helped the side comprising Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja lift the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
