Modern English School (Kandivli) emerged champions of the 123rd Giles Shield inter-school cricket tournament on Sunday when they beat Oxford Public School (Chembur) by nine wickets in the final at the Wankhede Stadium.

Both schools were making their maiden appearance in the final and dished out some noteworthy performances with bat and ball amidst some tense moments in the three-day affair.

Oxford Public School, who had conceded a 53-run first innings lead, tried to bat aggressively in the second essay. But except for left-handed middle-order batter Arham Jain, who top-scored with an 80-ball 57, the other batters struggled against some disciplined bowling from Modern English spinners Jasmit Singh (4-59) and Shaswat Naik (3-34) and were bowled out for 118 in 39.5 overs.

Earlier, Oxford Public were restricted to 218 all out, while Modern English in reply, piled up 271-9 to grab the crucial lead.

Chief guest Milind Rege, former Mumbai cricket captain, chief selector and administrator and Guest of Honour, Mohsin Khan, popular Indian television actor, presented the trophies and medals to the champions, runners-up and the individual award winners.
