Wriddhiman Saha had planned his retirement from cricket when he last visited Eden Gardens in June. However, after conducting a meeting with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to resolve the issues that had caused his move to Tripura for two seasons, Saha changed his mind. The credit goes to Sourav Ganguly. The former India captain convinced Wriddhiman Saha to stay and finish his career with Bengal. Despite struggling with injuries, the wicketkeeper-batsman decided to continue his play with the help of the team's physio. "You can say it was because of emotional attachment," he said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "I wasn't going to play this year but Sourav Ganguly and my wife pushed me to play and finish with Bengal after two seasons with Tripura," Wriddhiman Saha added. Further Wriddhiman Saha stated that he would not be available for all the white-ball segments of domestic cricket, knowing he couldn't handle the full season's demands. He also wanted to give others a chance, having already informed Gujarat Titans he wouldn't participate in the Indian Premier League anymore. One of the beneficiaries of Wriddhiman Saha's move to Tripura was Abishek Porel, who excelled in Saha's absence and earned retention from Delhi Capitals. As a mentor to young wicketkeepers, Saha finds this gratifying. "I've been pushing myself for the last year. But because of my body condition and injuries, I won't be able to play for the full season," he noted, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. "That's why I chose the most vital format - Ranji Trophy. It will be tough [to carry on] but I will play and hopefully, we qualify. If we do, I will play till the end of the season, else I'll finish off at Eden Gardens," he added. Also Read: Ranji Trophy: Siddhesh Lad, Shreyas Iyer breathe fire! "I was already prepared that I won't play this year but when my wife and Sourav Ganguly pushed me, I couldn't refuse," Saha said. Still recognised as one of the best wicketkeepers in India and possibly the world, Wriddhiman Saha is content with his career. Despite having played in the era of MS Dhoni and then Rishabh Pant, he does not consider himself unlucky. "There are so many of them who didn't play despite toiling so hard. Amol Muzumdar, Padmakar Shivalkar sir. I feel fortunate and proud to have played 40 Tests for India," he said. Saha finished his Test career with 1353 runs in 56 innings, averaging 29.41, with three centuries and six half-centuries. His standout moment was scoring unbeaten half-centuries in both innings to help India defeat New Zealand in 2016. While he feels he maybe could've done more with the bat, Saha emphasises that his priority was always wicketkeeping. "When I started, I was a wicketkeeper. I knew I could never be as good as Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Virat Kohli," Saha said. "I wanted to earn a name in what I did from childhood - that's why I put more emphasis on wicketkeeping," he added. Having trained under Kiran More, Saba Karim, and Deep Dasgupta, and having had chats with Dhoni, and interactions with Adam Gilchrist and Ian Healy, Wriddhiman Saha has always aimed to be at his best. Now, he enjoys mentoring young keepers. "I've spoken to keepers from the women's team, we keep talking to each other," he said. "Last IPL, Dhruv Jurel spoke to me. Rishabh [Pant] has done it all along when we played together. The understanding was good, he used to share his experiences, and I used to give him as much input as possible," he noted, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. Reflecting on his career, Saha is pleased he continued playing for three more years despite being told in late 2021 by then-coach Rahul Dravid that the Indian team was moving on from him. "That door got closed, but I knew domestic, and IPL was still there," he said. "It wasn't like I got demoralised because of that. I've played now for three years since that. Why did I start playing? Because I like it. Last year, I'd stopped liking the game and planned to leave. After this season, I'm moving on," he added. "Hopefully we can make the final. If not, I'll finish off at Eden Gardens," he concluded. (With ANI Inputs)
07 November,2024 02:54 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentDuring the third ODI between England and West Indies, a heated moment was seen between the pacer Alzarri Joseph and captain Shai Hope. During England's batting, the Caribbean pacer Alzarri Joseph left the field after having a heated conversation with his skipper Shai Hope. Joseph seemed to be unhappy with the fielding position set by his West Indies captain. Following the matter, on-field umpires urged the players to resume the play. After the over ended, the pacer was seen leaving the field and returned after a short break. He dismissed Jordan Cox (1) with a brute of a ball which spat from just short of a length at 148 kph and which Cox couldn't avoid and gloved to Hope behind the stumps. Later, Salt saw four partners come and go before finding one who could stay with him for some time. Curran joined him in a partnership of 70 for the fifth which helped to stabilise the England innings. He continued an excellent series in which he made 37 in the first match which England lost by eight wickets and 52 in the second which England won by five wickets. Salt reached his fifth ODI half-century from 79 balls and went on to 74 when he fell to Matthew Forde after a superb combined catch by Brandon King and Joseph. King reached Salt's towering shot into the deep, took the ball in both hands and flicked it back to Joseph as he balanced before running over the boundary.Salt's dismissal ended his 70-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Mousley who reached his half century from 64 balls. Archer hit three sixes in a bright innings at the death. West Indies went a bowler short when Romario Shepherd was injured bowling his seventh over and Sherfane Rutherford, who took his place, conceded 57 runs from 3.5 overs. (With AP Inputs)
07 November,2024 01:50 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentIndia will have to forget the wins in Australia over the last two trips as well as the unprecedented loss to New Zealand at home recently to give themselves a chance of emerging victorious Down Under, said 1983 World Cup winner Sandeep Patil here on Wednesday. The Indian team will soon be hitting the Australian shores with their pride at stake, having been blanked 0-3 by New Zealand at home. 07 November,2024 09:25 AM IST | Mumbai | PTIThere are many facets to former India batsman, coach and chief selector Sandeep Patil which is why comparing him to an onion is almost inevitable. And on Wednesday, at the launch of his book Beyond Boundaries with mid-day Group Sports Editor Clayton Murzello at the Cricket Club of India, Patil’s contemporaries and friends peeled off many of his layers, just like that of an onion, to reveal his fondness for numerous things beyond cricket. The book is published by Global Cricket School and edited by Sonali Velinker Kamat. Former India all-rounder, captain and coach Ravi Shastri, who was the chief guest for the occasion, revealed how Patlya, his roommate through most cricketing journeys, loved his food. “I remember after our 1983 World Cup final win in England, we got very hungry at 3 am after all the partying, so Sandeep and I headed out into the city to find food. Wimpy’s was the only place open at Leicester Square around 4 am and we filled our bags with burgers to take back,” said Shastri. Also Read: Ranji Trophy: Siddhesh Lad, Shreyas Iyer breathe fire! This is not to discount the man’s cricketing achievements one bit though, stressed Shastri: “Sandeep has a very shrewd cricketing brain. Also, he was one of the hardest hitters, I’ve ever seen back then. He and Kapil [Dev].” Former Mumbai captain Milind Rege recalled Patil’s penchant for jokes. “Sandeep always carried a small chit in his pocket and would read out jokes from there to all of us. But I always believe that he could have achieved a lot more, like the Gavaskars and the Vengsarkars, but Sandeep enjoyed life beyond cricket too and the best part is that he has no regrets about it,” said Rege. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar revealed that Sandeep is an all-out carnivore. “I remember once we were playing a match in Gujarat and someone had invited us for dinner. There, the host prepared Undhiyu [a mixed vegetable dish] and Sandeep, much to our shock, politely turned to the host and said, ‘Sorry, but I’m pure non-vegetarian,’ and he returned to the team hotel and ordered his meat,” said Manjrekar. Former India captain Dilip Vengsakar summed up Patil’s love for cricket and entertainment. “I remember our inter-college final where his team [Poddar College] beat us [Ruia College] and I headed home straight after the defeat. Around half-an-hour after I landed home, the entire Ruia team was below my building, singing, dancing and chanting slogans against me. Sandeep convinced me that his teammates had done that and he was not part of it, but later I got to know that he was very much part of it. But that’s how competitive and entertaining he was,” concluded Vengsarkar.
07 November,2024 07:23 AM IST | Mumbai | Ashwin FerroTest discard Shreyas Iyer, who opted to take rest during Mumbai’s previous match against Tripura, scored a determined unbeaten 152 as the hosts put up 385-3 at stumps on Day One of their Elite Group ‘A’ Ranji Trophy match at the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Bandra-Kurla Complex ground on Wednesday. Siddhesh Lad (116 not out, 14x4) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (92, 13x4, 3x6) also showcased a patient approach as Mumbai dominated the opening day. Ayush Mhatre goes early Put into bat, the hosts lost opener Ayush Mhatre (18) early, who was trapped LBW by pacer Suryakant Pradhan (1-36) in the fifth over. Fellow opener Raghuvanshi and one drop Lad, who played for Goa in the 2022-23 season, put on a 135-run stand thereafter. Also Read: Anil Kumble wants these three players to play in the T20I series against South Africa Raghuvanshi, 20, who is playing his second first-class game, showed patience as well as attacking intent. He reached his maiden half-century in 92 balls with a six off left-arm spinner Harshit Rathod (0-94). He added another 42 off just 32 balls, before falling short of his century by just eight runs when pacer Biplab Samantray (2-36) disturbed his furniture. “I wasn’t thinking too much about my score. It was just about continuing to bat the way I was batting. I played a bad shot [got out while trying to play square drive]. I’ll try not to do it next time. But our team is in a good position, so I am happy,” Raghuvanshi told reporters later. Rahane out for a duck Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane (0) was trapped LBW immediately on the next delivery after Raghuvanshi’s dismissal by Samantray. But Lad and No.5 Iyer gave the opponents a tough time and dominated the proceedings throughout the day. Iyer looked in an attacking mood during his 164-ball stay at the crease, executing straight drives, on-drives, cover drives and back-foot shots at will. He needed just 101 balls to bring up his second successive century with a single against off-spinner Govinda Poddar (0-61). Iyer enjoyed some big hitting with well-timed 18 fours and four huge sixes. He had previously scored a dominant 142 v Maharashtra. Unlike Iyer, Lad, who scored his ninth first-class century in his 70th game, took his time to settle down. During his six hour-plus stay at the crease, he shared a 231-run unbeaten stand for the fourth wicket with Iyer. Brief scoresMumbai 385-3 (S Iyer 152*, S Lad 116*, A Raghuvanshi 92; B Samantray 2-36) v Odisha
07 November,2024 07:20 AM IST | Mumbai | Subodh MayureFormer captain Ricky Ponting reckons Australia will clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 against India as the visitors will find taking 20 wickets in a Test as their “biggest challenge” in the absence of Mohammed Shami. Australia are keen on ending their barren run in the Border-Gavaskar with India winning each of the four series since 2014-15, including the historic triumphs Down Under in 2018-19 and 2020-21. However, with India suffering the historic low of a first-ever whitewash by 0-3 against New Zealand, Ponting believes the hosts have a better chance of defeating India now. “Probably more so now [than before],” Ponting said about Australia’s chances on the ICC Review Show. Also Read: Maxwell lauds RCB for honest breakdown of his non-retention in IPL 2025 Shami will be missed Shami has been out of action since last November due to injuries and Ponting believes his absence leaves a big hole in India’s bowling attack comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and the uncapped Harshit Rana. Ponting said, “Shami just leaves such a big hole in that bowling group. Back then [in August], there was still some conjecture whether Shami would be fit or not.“I think taking 20 wickets in a Test match for India is going to be the biggest challenge. I think they’ll bat well enough out here with the current group of batters that they’ve got.” While hailing Australia as a more settled unit, Ponting backed India to not be absolute pushovers when the series gets underway from November 22 in Perth. “I think India will win a Test match somewhere through the five Test matches,” Ponting predicted. ‘Oz look more settled’ “But I still think now, Australia probably look a bit more settled, a bit more experienced and we know that they’re a very hard team to beat at home. So I’ll stick with the 3-1.” This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 07 November,2024 07:11 AM IST | Dubai | PTIDashing Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has appreciated Royal Challengers Benagluru's effort to reach out to him and explain the reasons behind not retaining him ahead of this month's IPL 2025 mega auction, terming his exit from the franchise as a "beautiful" one. RCB has retained only three Indian players -- Virat Kohli, Yash Dayal and Rajat Patidar. Maxwell joined RCB in 2021, and played a key role in the middle-order in the past four seasons, out of which the Benagaluru side made it to three play-offs. "I got a phone call from Mo Bobat and Andy Flower. I sat there on a zoom call, where they explained the decision not to be retained. It was actually really beautiful, except may be if that could be possible. We ended up talking about the game for about half-an-hour, talking about their strategy and what they are looking to do going forward," Maxwell said on ESPNcricinfo's Around the Wicket show. "I completely understand the direction they are heading. They need 3 Indians to build that core and hopefully, their overseas players can complement those locals. I was really happy with that. If every team did that, I think probably will make relationships more smoother," added the Australian, who is RCB's fifth-highest run getter with 1266 runs from 52 matches. Also Read: Pizza to pace! Thomas Draca set to bring Italian flair to the IPL scene Maxwell, however, still harbours hopes of being picked by RCB in the mega auction, slated to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25. "I won't say my RCB innings is over but I would certainly like to get back there. It was a great franchise and I really enjoyed my time there." RCB's head coach Andy Flower and Director of Cricket Mo Bobat also took RCB's Instagram handle to explain about the franchise's decision not to retain big names like Maxwell, former skipper Faf du Plessis and India pacer Mohammed Siraj. "Maxi (Maxwell) has been an integral part of RCB. He is a sensationally, exciting player. He is known for the maverick type tag and that's how he plays and sometimes that's how he lives," Flower said. Bobat was more detailed, saying: "He (Siraj) has played for RCB in the past and not somebody we have retained at this junction. Again we have kept our options open in particular with our desire to retain a strong Indian core to use our finances in that way and keep our options in terms of our overseas players. "There are a number of overseas players we have not retained but we will keep an eye on them going into the auction." Both Flower and Bobat said the decision not to retain Du Plessis and Siraj was a tough a very difficult one. "One of the people affected by these retentions is someone I admire greatly -- Faf du Plessis. I have known Faf for a number of years. I have worked with him at different franchises, it was really a tough season. He is calm, strong with a good sense of humour. He is a guy we spent a lot of time discussing," Flower said. "This is the start of a new cycle with the auctions, we are leaving our options open on the leadership front." Bobat termed the decision to let go Du Plessis as a tricky one. "The decision to not retain Faf was a tricky one because I have great admiration for him as a bloke, as a cricketer, as a leader and as a captain. We can't underestimate how bigger role he has played for us in the last few years and we are going to be missing him. That was a tough decision for us. "Obviously the way these retentions are set up it is difficult to get everything you want. I think he will admit that he is in the latter part of his career now and obviously Andy and I have to really think strongly around RCB's leadership moving forward." Both Flower and Bobat said the decision not to retain Siraj was completely a tactical thinking. "I am sure one of the surprises around our retention is that we haven't retained Mohammed Siraj. Siraj is a successful international cricketer of great repute. He also has been with RCB for last eight seasons. The skills in the fast bowling department we have already identified and retained, they think which we want is the left-arm angle and T20 skills that Yash Dayal has," Flower explained. Bobat added: "Probably the decision which took most time is whether we retain Mohammed Siraj or not because he has got that real fire which is infectious for the rest of the team. He goes on quite well with Virat and the combination of those two is very powerful. It was a big decision for us to make not to retain Siraj." (With agency inputs)
06 November,2024 09:31 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentFor the first time in IPL history, a cricketer from Italy has made it to the longlist for the highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction. However, contrary to earlier speculations, it isn't former Australia batter Joe Burns, who switched allegiances to Italy, instead, it is 24-year-old Thomas Draca, whose registration has put Italy firmly on the radar of IPL scouts and fans alike. The auction, set to take place in Jeddah on November 24-25, has attracted a record 1,574 players, including 1,165 from India and a host of international cricketers. Among the overseas entrants, South Africa boasts the largest contingent with 92 players, followed by Australia (76 players) and England (52 players). Surprisingly, the auction has also piqued the interest of cricketers from associate nations like the United States and the United Arab Emirates, with Draca standing out as the first representative from Italy. Born in 2000, Draca is a dynamic all-rounder who made his international debut for Italy in June 2024. In his debut match against Luxembourg, he put up a standout performance, taking two wickets for 15 runs in four overs, helping Italy secure a comprehensive 77-run victory. Also Read: James Anderson leads IPL 2025 auction list, Ben Stokes missing Since then, Draca has played four T20 internationals, claiming a total of eight wickets, with a best of 3/9 against Isle of Man. Draca’s impressive performances didn’t go unnoticed in the global circuit. During the Global T20 Canada 2024, where he represented the Brampton Wolves, Draca emerged as one of the tournament's top performers. He finished as the joint second-highest wicket-taker, with 11 wickets in 6 matches, boasting an exceptional average of 10.63 and an economy rate of 6.88. Draca's standout performance came against Surrey, where he claimed three wickets for 18 runs, playing a crucial role in defending a total of 198 and securing a 59-run victory for his team. He also impressed in other matches, recording figures of 3/10 against Mississauga and 3/30 against Surrey, which contributed to Brampton's second-place finish in the tournament's points table. Unfortunately, Brampton's campaign ended with a loss to the Toronto Nationals in the second qualifier. Draca's strong performances in international cricket and the GT20 Canada led to his inclusion in the MI Emirates squad for the upcoming International League T20 (ILT20), further solidifying his credentials on the global stage.
06 November,2024 07:34 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentKL Rahul's batting number and current form will be keenly watched by the national selection committee as he gets ready to show his wares for India A against an Australia A line-up that will have seasoned Scott Boland in its ranks in the second unofficial Test match starting on Thursday. Save Rahul, there isn't a single player in the India A line-up who has featured in a match at the iconic MCG, where India is scheduled to play the Boxing Day Test from December 26. Having been dropped midway through the home Tests against New Zealand, the Indian selectors in consultation with the team management decided to send Rahul and reserve keeper Dhruv Jurel for the second 'A' Test before they link up with the senior team in Perth on January 11. With Boland, one of Australia's senior reserve pacers steaming in and hitting the deck, it will be a stern test for the likes of Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad, B Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal, but Rahul will certainly get the maximum traction because of his chances of playing in the high-profile Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During the practice session at the MCG, Rahul looked in good touch. Also Read: The future of KL Rahul With Easwaran and skipper Gaikwad set to open, it is expected that Rahul will bat at No. 5 or 6 in the India A set-up, as that would be his batting position if he is selected in the India playing XI at ay point during the Test series. There is a firm belief that when it comes to quality fast bowling in bouncy conditions, Rahul with hundreds at Lord's, Oval, Sydney, Centurion is way more equipped than domestic doyen Sarfaraz Khan, although the latter after his 150 against New Zealand at Bengaluru will certainly be the favourite to play at the Optus Stadium from November 22. As far as the India A team is concerned, there will be four changes in the squad that played the first 'unofficial Test' at Mackay, which the visitors lost by seven wickets. Rahul will come in place of Baba Indrajith, who scored 9 and 6 and didn't look comfortable at all against pace and bounce, which wasn't exactly 125 clicks. Jurel will come in place of Ishan Kishan, who was at the centre of a ball-change controversy at Mackay, although it was more about his terse remarks that left the on-field umpires annoyed. Navdeep Saini, who also had a poor game will make way for left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed, while off-spinner all-rounder Tanush Kotian will replace slow left-arm orthodox Manav Suthar in the playing XI. Two players who will miss out on game time are keeper-batter Abhishek Porel and burly middle-order willow wielder Ricky Bhui. (With agency inputs)
06 November,2024 05:43 PM IST | Melbourne | mid-day online correspondentAhead of the highly-anticipated auctions for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings announced batters Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh as their player retentions for the coming edition. He added that they build their core players at the auction along with some from the 2024 squad. "We have a plan in place for adding to the core. You will see a lot more surprises as well. You will see the core group forming and we are confident we will go all out and make a big play this season," he said. Prabhsimran has been with Punjab since 2019 and over the past six years, the wicketkeeper has scored 756 runs in 34 games at an average of 22.24 and a strike rate of 146.23. Meanwhile, Shashank emerged as one of the key players for the team last season, scoring an impressive 354 runs in 14 games at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 164.65. "We have seen Prabhsimran develop over the last six years. He is a player that we have put a lot of faith in. We have seen him bloom. He played some fantastic innings last year. We believe he is on the cusp of breaking into the big leagues," Menon said. Also Read: 'Time to repay the faith': Punjab Kings' Shashank Singh ready to build on breakthrough IPL season "As far as Shashank is concerned, he is known for his batting at multiple positions in the order. He showed his mettle last season. He continues with the same style and passion. That was one of the big reasons why we retained him. He is a gun fielder. And these two players are the best fits for us," he further added. Earlier this year, the Kings announced Ricky Ponting as the Head Coach for the coming season, and Menon hinted that the Aussie legend will bring in new and fresh ideas at the upcoming auctions. He further added that his side will eye the trophy this season. "This auction will be critical as we go there with maximum purse. We will build on what we have at the moment. It will be an interesting auction, especially for us, as we also have a new coach in Ricky Ponting. He is one of the sharpest minds in cricket. You will see us develop an extraordinary team. Our goal is to go for silverware this year - nothing short of that," he signed off. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
