India and Mumbai Indians pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah produced an outstanding display of fast bowling, but his team ended up on the losing side against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL contest at the DY Patil Stadium here on Monday.

Bumrah claimed a sensational 5 for 10 in his four-over quota by picking up two wickets in his second over and three without conceding a run in his third to halt KKR’s progress at 165 for 9 from 123 for two after the 13th over.

However, the under-performing MI batting line-up faltered once again in the season of huge disappointment and the five-time champions were shot out for a meagre 113 in 17.3 overs to lose by 52 runs with only opener Ishan Kishan making a fight of it with a knock of 51.

Process-driven

Player of the match Bumrah, who had claimed just five wickets overall in the previous matches, said after his team’s ninth defeat that he was happy with his rhythm right through MI’s dismal campaign and was not affected by critical comments from outside his team environment.

“I was very happy with the rhythm going on throughout the tournament. I know a lot of noise is going on outside, but I am not affected. For me, personal evaluation is very important. I look at the processes that I have to follow and how I can contribute and help the team,” Bumrah said at the post-match media conference.

“I try to adapt to the conditions quickly. That is very important for me. I try to follow the process, but end result is not in my hands. Today was a good day, very happy about it.

“We have not been able to close out close games. We have a new team with quite a few youngsters. We have not been outplayed,” he pointed out about the most successful IPL franchise’s failed campaign to regain the crown.

“I don’t keep track of figures or goals. My aim is to stick to the process. Sometimes you bowl well, but don’t get wickets,” he said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Bumrah claimed the wickets of big-hitting Andre Russell and Nitish Rana in his second over and then added those of Sheldon Jackson, Pat Cummins and Sunil Narine in the third in four balls to steal the day’s individual honours.

“It was a great effort from the bowling unit [in which] Bumrah was special. [I am] Disappointed at the way we batted. It was not really difficult [batting on this pitch],” said losing team skipper Rohit Sharma, who made just two in the run chase before edging Tim Southee behind the stumps.

Lack of partnerships

“We are playing our fourth game here and we know what to expect. We know seam bowlers will get some help from the pitch. We didn’t get partnerships and you need partnerships chasing a total like that,” he added.

The best partnership for MI was 35 for the third wicket between top scorer Kishan and Ramandeep Singh (12). Venkatesh Iyer made 43 and more importantly provided the two-time champions KKR with their best opening partnership this season when he put on 60 for the first wicket with Ajinkya Rahane (25).
