Though Delhi Capitals’ (DC) batsman Shreyas Iyer was out of action for the last seven months due to a shoulder injury, he displayed fine touch during an unbeaten 47-run knock in his team’s eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Dubai on Wednesday.

In a low scoring affair, DC restricted SRH for 134-9 in the allotted 20 overs.

In reply, besides Iyer, who hit two sixes and as many fours during his 41-ball knock, opener Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Rishabh Pant contributed with 42 and 35 not out respectively as they achieved the target with 13 balls to spare.

Iyer was ruled out of the first phase of IPL-14 earlier this year in India after sustaining a shoulder injury during the home ODI series against England. Iyer spoke of how he overcame that tough phase.

Tough times

“When I got injured, it was really difficult for me to adapt to the fact that I got injured. But I have a very close-knit family and they never made me feel that I was going through an injury. My friends ensured that I was always in a positive frame of mind."

“Then, when the rehab began and I started gaining strength, that feeling was really amazing and that put me in a really good frame of mind as I felt I would come back positive and strong,” Iyer said during the post-match virtual media interaction in reply to mid-day’s question on how he handled the injury phase.

Iyer, 26, was DC skipper in the earlier two IPL editions. He has scored 813 runs in 22 ODIs and 550 runs in 29 T20Is. He will be with the Indian team during the T20 World Cup in UAE next month as a standby.

When asked about his comeback knock, Iyer said: “It’s a really good feeling.

Not satisfied

“To be honest, I wouldn’t say that I’m satisfied because the hunger has just gone up and the appetite keeps on increasing every match you play, so yes, I am not
satisfied or not contained. I like to soak in the pressure. When there is pressure, there are more challenges. Even today [Wednesday] when I went in, there was pressure to win the game. The wicket was a bit uneven but the mindset is the same, you have to finish the match. The idea is to play till the last ball and see to it that I make the team win,” Iyer  signed off.
