Samson and Varma leave South Africa in tatters with brutal centuries

After enduring back-to-back ducks in the previous two matches, Sanju Samson made a spectacular return to form, smashing a brilliant century in the fourth T20I against South Africa. Samson's explosive knock dismantled the South African bowling attack, as he bludgeoned his way to a well-paced 100, his third in the last five T20I matches. His innings, which came off just 51 balls, were studded with six fours and eight sixes, marking a commanding statement of intent after his recent struggles. Meanwhile, on the other end, Tilak Varma continued his remarkable run, following up his stunning maiden T20I century in the previous match with another explosive hundred. Varma's 100 came off just 41 balls and included 6 fours and 9 sixes, as he put the South African bowlers to the sword, showing once again why he is one of India’s most promising young talents. Both batters' scintillating centuries put India on course to post a mammoth total, with the scoreboard ticking at a rapid pace. Also Read: Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma survive Jansen jitters India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and opted to bat first in the fourth and final T20I, sticking with an unchanged lineup from the previous match. Both teams went into the match with unchanged squads, as India sought to build on their 2-1 lead in the series. After a dominant performance in the third T20I, where they successfully defended a target to secure an 11-run victory, India was looking to seal the series with another commanding display. The clash against South Africa in Johannesburg promised to be a thrilling encounter as India aimed to cap off what has been a fantastic year for their T20I side. With a series win on the line and key players like Samson and Varma in such good form, India was determined to end the year on a high note, having already secured their second-ever T20 World Cup victory earlier in June.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma survive Jansen jitters

In a dramatic start to the fourth T20I between India and South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, India's Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma narrowly escaped early dismissals in the opening over, thanks to missed and dropped catches from South African fielders. Both Samson and Sharma were given a reprieve in consecutive deliveries due to missed and dropped catches, which could have potentially derailed India’s innings. On the third ball of Jansen’s opening over, Samson, who had narrowly avoided a third consecutive duck, was tested with a full, wide cross-seamer that angled away from him. He pushed at it and got an outside edge, but the ball flew narrowly wide of the first slip. It was a close call, but luck was on his side, and he survived to fight another ball. The very next delivery saw Sharma facing a similar fate. Jansen bowled a full and fastball outside off stump, and Sharma attempted to drive it but ended up getting a thick outside edge. The ball flew rapidly towards the first slip, where Reeza Hendricks, positioned to take the catch, couldn’t react in time. He attempted to snare it around his face but fumbled the sharp chance, and Sharma, too, was given a reprieve. Both batsmen were given a new lease of life, and their fortunes were firmly in the hands of the fielders. India had opted to bat first after Suryakumar Yadav, leading the side for the first time in the series, won the toss. Continuing the trend of batting first, which had worked well for India in the earlier games, the decision seemed to be a calculated one, given the form of their batters. In the previous match, the Indians had been propelled by a stellar knock from Tilak Varma, who made an emphatic statement at No.3 with a remarkable unbeaten 107 off 56 balls. The third game had been a thrilling encounter, with India fighting back after a narrow defeat in the second T20I, where South Africa won by three wickets, chasing down India’s total with some nervy finishing. Earlier, India had dominated the series opener, winning by 61 runs in a comprehensive performance. The series had now come down to the final match, with India looking to seal the win and take a 3-1 lead. This match against South Africa was also a significant moment for the Indian team, marking the end of a sensational year in T20I cricket. India had dominated the shortest format, not only winning the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in June but also amassing a staggering 24 wins out of 26 matches played throughout the year. With such an impressive record, India’s T20I campaign had been one of the most successful in recent memory, and the team was eager to cap off the year with another victory, rounding off a memorable run in T20 cricket.

The highest reserve price is set at INR 2 crore, with 81 players opting for this bracket. The largest segment comprises players with a base price of INR 30 lakh, totalling 320. Among the standout names are Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul, part of the 12 marquee players. These three captains were released by their respective franchises ahead of the retention deadline. For the first time since 2018, the marquee players are divided into two sets, comprising seven Indian players and five overseas stars. India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2012-13, primarily meeting in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup. Last week, the PCB wrote to the ICC seeking reasons behind India's refusal to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled for early 2025, as reported by Geo News. India has cited 'security concerns' for its stance. The ICC has confirmed in writing that India will not travel to Pakistan for the event. In response, the PCB consulted with the Pakistan government and is looking to present its stance. The PCB has emphasized that their team travelled to India for the ODI World Cup in 2023, hoping for reciprocity. As per ESPNCricinfo, BCCI told ICC that the central government has advised it to not visit Pakistan for the eight-team competition, which is scheduled to be held from February 19 to March 9 next year. It means that ICC and PCB will now have to decide on another plan, which is likely to involve a hybrid model plan as a part of which India will play its set of matches at some other venue while the rest of the tournament takes place in Pakistan. ICC directs PCB to cancel Champions Trophy tour in PoK: Report

The Champions Trophy scheduled for next year in Pakistan is embroiled in daily twists and turns, with fresh controversies emerging at every turn In a new development on Friday, India Today reported that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has opted to cancel the scheduled Champions Trophy tour to Skardu, Murree, and Muzaffarabad—regions situated in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This move follows objections raised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the proposed itinerary shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Initially, the PCB had announced a nationwide trophy tour scheduled from November 16 to 24. The board took to X and unveiled that the Champions Trophy tour will kick off in Islamabad and will also see destinations like Skardu, Murree, Hunza, and Muzaffarabad. "Catch a glimpse of the trophy which Sarfaraz Ahmed lifted in 2017 at The Oval, from 16-24 November," PCB wrote on X. Pant clean bowled twice, Kohli plays through pain-free zone in match simulation

India's intra-squad match simulation provided a mix of positives and concerns ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener against Australia in Perth. In overcast conditions at the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), India ramped up preparations for the gruelling opening Test, set to begin next week. With uncertainty surrounding skipper Rohit Sharma's participation in the first Test, KL Rahul opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, according to ESPNcricinfo. Rahul looked assured during his time at the crease. The experienced batter treaded carefully and handled short balls well until a Prasidh Krishna bouncer struck his elbow, requiring medical attention. The 32-year-old left the field and did not return as India's mainstays had another turn at the crease. Jaiswal showcased aggression with a belligerent drive, but his intent was curtailed when he edged a ball to the second slip--a recurring theme during the session. Despite reports of undergoing scans, Virat Kohli appeared in shape, displaying a trademark cover drive. However, on 15, he edged a Mukesh Kumar delivery to the second slip. Kohli later spent about 30 minutes in the nets. Also Read: India have your numbers, Aus! Rishabh Pant showed promise in his innings but was visibly jaded after sustaining a groin injury. He was eventually bowled by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who emerged as a standout performer. Shubman Gill started cautiously, scoring 28 before edging a short delivery to gully. Washington Sundar and Tanush Kotian bowled in tandem as the batting side stood at 106/5 after 28 overs. India's main batters had another opportunity at the crease, with Jaiswal and Gill initially adopting an aggressive approach before reverting to caution under the watchful eyes of the coaches patrolling the boundary line. Jaiswal appeared the most comfortable against short-pitched deliveries, both in the match and net sessions. He was more aggressive against the spinners, reaching an unbeaten 52, while Gill anchored the innings with an unbeaten 42. After the final interval, Kohli and Pant faced a barrage of short deliveries from Prasidh and Nitish. Kohli seemed troubled by a few balls but showed no signs of discomfort, batting for an hour to finish on 30. Pant, in contrast, adopted a proactive approach, stepping down the crease with mixed success before being bowled by Mukesh for the second time that day. Jurel and Akash Deep returned for the final session as the batting side concluded at 339/8 in 75 overs of match simulation.  (With agency inputs)

KL Rahul (Pic: File Pic)

"My aim is to get back into T20 team, look forward to this IPL": KL Rahul

Struggling KL Rahul is looking forward to using IPL 2025 as a vehicle to make a comeback in India's T20I side as he wants to remain in the mix for all three formats. KL Rahul will likely open the innings for India if captain Rohit Sharma misses out on the first Test match against Australia ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. KL Rahul's form is a bit concerning for Team India as he was dropped from the last two Tests against New Zealand and was replaced by Sarfaraz Khan. But the batter, who is pleasing to watch when in full flow, remains unperturbed by his lean run of form. "My aim is to obviously get back into the T20 team. I've always wanted to be an all-format player, and that desire and drive haven't changed over the years. I want to still play for India in all three formats and have done that for many years," Rahul told Star Sports. Also Read: Haryana's Anshul Kamboj becomes only third bowler to claim all 10 wickets in Ranji Trophy, WATCH VIDEO "I've been out of the T20 team for a while, and I know where I stand as a player and what I need to do to get back. So, I look forward to this IPL season to give me that platform to enjoy my cricket and play the way I want to," he added. Since 2022, he has scored 514 runs in Tests from 12 matches (21 innings) at an average of 25.7, having registered three half-centuries and a century. During the interaction, Rahul emphasised always keeping the team ahead of his individual aspirations. "All of us as players want to play with freedom, and everyone would think that the way I batted, I'm enjoying playing that. But like I said, my thought process and motivation have always been team first. It doesn't matter what I want to do or what my natural game is. "We play a team sport. If I played tennis, it would be different; I could stick to saying, 'This is my natural game.' But in a team sport, it's very different. Each game, you'll have a different role and responsibility given to you to find a way to deliver for the team," he said. The Bengaluru man's last Test hundred was against South Africa at Centurion in December 2023 and since then made just two fifties in nine innings. (With PTI Inputs)
