You don't have to hit every ball for six: Kallis

Royal Challengers Bangalore had a woeful run in the Indian Premier League's inaugural season. Jacques Kallis was supposed to be their main all-rounder but surprisingly he failed to come to terms with the new format of the game. He flopped, so did his team.

In the second season, the South African star is finally coming to grips with Twenty20 cricket. He had his most satisfying day in the IPL yesterday, leading Royal Challengers to a nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians at the Wanderers with an unbeaten 69 off 59 balls.

"I have been working hard with Duncan Fletcher and Mickey Arthur on my Twenty20 and one-day game. I really wanted to do well in T20 and in the last year, I have really put in a lot of effort on my Twenty20 game. I am happy that it is paying off," a delighted Kallis said being named Man of the Match.

Most players make the mistake of becoming too aggressive in Twenty20. Kallis said: "Basically, it's about adjusting. You don't have to hit every ball for six."

The turning point of the game was when Kallis took on MI pace spearhead Lasith Malinga in his first over, hitting him for two sixes. "You have to score runs off the new ball because it becomes tougher when the ball becomes old. Malinga is their main bowler and he bowled two loose balls and we could put the pressure back on him."
