Contary to reports, former India coach John Wright is still in the race for the Kolkata Knight Riders' coaching job. It has been reported that Wright's chances have diminished since he would not be in a position to stay in India for several months due to his commitments back home. At present, he is adviser to New Zealand Cricket's national selection panel.
But sources told MiD DAY last night that the New Zealander will "consider" what the KKR bosses want and then take a call. Of course, there are other contenders in the fray too. There could be a fear within the KKR set-up that Wright would end up being a yes man to Sourav Ganguly, who will in all probability, regain his captaincy for the 2010 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Wright proved during his tenure as India coach that he could be as hard as the toughest although he preferred to do it behind closed doors.
That he told the media on arrival in Chennai (to assist the New Zealand 'A' team) that he was in talks with KKR is unlike-Wright, but it's no big deal either.
Cricket personalities are understandably cautious while talking to the media when they could be in line for a high-profile job, but sometimes telling it like it is could be the best option.
The one aspect that goes against Wright is that he hasn't done serious coaching since he ended his India term in 2005. A decision on the coach will not be taken in a hurry. Until then, KKR are still hunting for Mr Right.
