The term Mankaded was named after Indian legend Vinoo Mankad who ran out Australian non-striker Bill Brown during the Sydney Test in 1947. Here is a look at other such instances in the history of the game and their impact on the result.


Ian Redpath Mankaded by Charlie Griffith (Australia vs West Indies, 4th Test, Sir Frank Worrell Trophy, January 24th - 29th, 1969)

Chasing a total of 360 in the second innings of the fourth test, West Indian quick Charile Griffith 'Mankaded Aussie batsman Ian Redpath for backing up too far. Australia barely managed to cling on to a draw in the test.

Greg Chappell Mankaded Brian Luckhurst (Australia vs England, Melbourne, January 1st, 1975)

Long before he asked his brother Trevor to bowl the infamous underarmed delivery, Greg Chappell had anothre controversy to his name when he 'Mankaded' England's Brian luckhurst in an ODI game in Melbourne. Inspite of the controversial dismissal, England went on to win that game by three wickets.

Ewen Chatfield Mankaded Derek Randall (England vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Christchurch, February 24th - March 1st, 1978)

New Zealand quick Ewan Chatfield ended up Mankading England middle order batsman Derek Randall in the second test match at Christchurch. England went on to win the game comprehensivly by 174 runs.

Alan Hurst Mankaded Sikandar Bakht (Australia vs Pakistan, 2nd Test, WACA, Perth, March 24th - 29th, 1979)

This was a case of a fast bowler running out a fast bowler when Aussie quick Alan Hurst Mankaded Pakistani fast bowler Sikandar Bakht during the second test of the series at Perth. Australia went on to win the test by seven wickets.

Dipak Patel Mankaded Grant Flower (Zimbabwe vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI, Harare, November 8th, 1992)
Dipak Patel could well be considered as the first spinner to open the bowling in ODI cricket. However, he will also be remembered for Mankading Zimbabwean legend Grant Flower during an ODI match in Harare. New Zealand went on to win the game by four wickets.

Kapil Dev Mankaded Peter Kirsten (India vs South Africa, 2nd ODI, December 9, 1992, Port Elizabeth)

This was one incident that would be a part of Kapil Dev's illustrious career. He warned South Africa's Peter Kirsten a couple of times for backing too far and eventually 'Mankaded' him. Kirsten showed dissent to the Umpire's decision although South Africa went on to win the game by six wickets.

Sachithra Senanayake Mankaded Jos Buttler (England vs Sri Lanka, 5th ODI, Edgbaston, 3rd June, 2014)

The series decider between England and Sri Lanka ended on a sour note as Lankan offie Sachithra Senanayake Mankaded England's wicket keeper Jos Buttler. Captain Angelo Matthews decided to stick to the appeal on being questioned by the umpire and Buttler was given the marching orders. Sri Lanka won the match by six wickets.

There was another controversial incident during India's tour of Australia in 2012, when Ravichandran Ashwin 'Mankaded' Sri Lanka's Lahiru Thirrimanne, while he was batting on 44, during a tri-series match at the Gabba in Brisbane. The umpires asked stand-in skipper Sehwag whether he wished to uphold the decision, which he refused after discussions with the team and Thirimanne was called back. He went on to score 62 and India went on to lose the match by 51 runs.
